BrokenCadillac hates GM but loves to use the name of one of their cars for his name...what a bozo. There must be someone to complain to about jerks that post on here and I'm gonna find it and get this idiot removed.

The Impala "W body" dates back to the 90's kid. The same one that underpinns the Buick Lacrust and Pontiac Grand Priq. GM has a history of milking platforms for decades and just changing sheetmetal with each new model. Still got the same old 4-speed tranny, same old pushrod motors and of course every GM fans wetdream, the 3800 boat anchor.

The SS looks OK, but if I were in that market I doubt I would choose the Cobalt over a Civic Si, GTI or Mazdaspeed 3.

Good for GM on the sales though, but please don't let this platform last for as long as the Cavalier's did. I mean come on, 1982 to 2005?!?! Please don't do that again.

Build a better one in 2-3 years that will make me not want to buy those other cars.

Chevy's are rehashed? The Sky's a dismal ride? Whatever. Subjective opinion, nothing more. Everyone's a critic. I drive a Mazda3, so I know about the "best kept secret" on the road. Either way, doesn't mean GM is crap. Anyone living in a service bay for virtually *any* car built within the last 5 years is loser and a Grade A asshat moron to boot - maintaining today's cars is easier than screwing a chick.

solid cars that will be there for you day and night if you are willing to live in the service bay...

"but a look at latest Chevys and the new Saturn Sky makes it clear GM is serious about giving the competition a run for their collective pocketbooks."

The latest Chevy's are nothing more than rehashed "Old Chevy's" and the Saturn Sky is a dismal ride wrapped in a pretty sheetmetal. The Miata is a much better balanced car. I am a Ford fan too, and GM cars I've owned blew chunks.

Niels,

Best comment I've seen in a long time. Personally, I can't stand the Cobalt, and GM would have to pay me to drive one again. But as a rental car, it certainly proves GM's merits and shows what GM does exceptionally well from an engineering perspective. I don't question that the Cobalt is most definitely on par when it comes to reliability, and I can't stand these elitist wannabe euro-weenies who can't be bothered recognize minor things like statistical facts just because they'd be afraid to take to their precious starbucks drive-thru for fear of what their so-called friends might think.

GM's been like this for a long time - mechanically speaking, they build solid cars that will be there for you day and night. Styling is lacking, as it seems GM wishes to please all by offending none. (how offensive.) Love it or hate it, but I think GM is finally starting to make strides there too. Granted, interior fit and finish could use some work, but a look at latest Chevys and the new Saturn Sky makes it clear GM is serious about giving the competition a run for their collective pocketbooks.

Being a Ford man myself, I can't help but toss in here that Ford gets it too. Gentleman, the game is on.

Glad to see some positive comments about Cobalt and sales and GM. The negative guys probably should just move to Japan or Germany, they'd like it better there. Patrick, what do you do for a living? Tell us so we can use a Japanese product or company to help put you out of a job.

Niels, #1 GM Fan, 1c3d0g, email me sometime.... jim@idriveamerican.com

Patrick, seriously, screw yourself. Rental cars take twice the abuse and negligence of consumer cars. Would a rental company want to buy cars that break down so often they can hardly loan them? And don't give me shit on how the money they save from GM's low MSRP later accounts for repair costs. That's hardcore bullshit and you know it. Cobalts have a distinct appearance and don't look like constipated goldfishes like the Corolla and Accent.

Well if GM was still flooding rental lots like they used too, But that are not.

The '08 Cobalt will get a new look.

They were thinking of an AWD version to compete against the EVO and WRX. GM Decided against this because of cost. Why would GM have a $35,000 Cobalt when you can buy a Camaro !!!

But the "08 Cobalt SS will get the Turboed LNF Ecotec engine !!!

This car sells to GM fanbois who haven't given anything else a chance.

What am I talking about? I skip right over any GM offering since I know it'll turn out to be a pile of doodoo by 50k, lose 75% of its value in 2 years and blend right in with the rest of the GM rental crap out there. So I guess pot, meet kettle.

This car is pathetic, it's a piece of shit. It has the most boring looks of any car in the compact car category, the interior is made of cheap, ill fitting plastics, and it's a mediocre drive. The only reason they're selling and that GM has to "keep up with demand" is because fleets love them and dealers post HUGE incentives on them, other than that they wouldn't be selling half as well.

As a vehicle, not my cup of tea, but I recently rented one in Austin.

The seats didn't win me over (I don't like to hunch when I drive) and the motor was a little crude, and the handling .... well, it's a rental, but I averaged 38mpg with the AC on in an automatic. NOT SHABBY.

Also, when I turned it in, the guy asked how I liked it. I said what I just wrote, and he said "yeah, but you know what? These things are pretty damn reliable compared to the other small cars here." They also had Toyotas, and he said the Cobalts hold up better as a rental for taking abuse.

I still found it a bit hard to believe, but he insisted. Anyway, for cheap wheels, it was fine, so the haters can knock it all they want ... GM saved me some money on a rental, and that is cool.

It's fleet buyers for sure. This car offers nothing desirable enough for the average consumer.

Richard L- Look at the dimensions of the Caliber and compare with the Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix--Nearly identical.

The rest of you out there-give the domestics a break. 1952 MG TD has it right. I see the US making great strides in quality and performance, but you buers won't give 'em a chance. I have both, I admit, but I find myself looking for the opportunity to buy the US cars more now than ever. This isn't protectionism; do your homework and you'll find it's true.

Is there an AWD version of this car? I'd consider one, if they had an AWD version. I'd drive a beater-box AWD car for winter and storms. What's the cheapest AWD vehicle that you can buy?

The Cobalt is a decent car. Nothing fancy, but inexpensive and pretty reliable. Styling could be better, but it's just a basic honest sedan, which I respect.

I've always liked the car and the interior looks decent enough, certainly beats the Cavalier and as far as incentives, the lease and finance rates are lower than what Honda and Toyota have, I have seen numerous lease offers in PA for these at $99/month(w/ i think 2k down) while the civic is around 150, if ur on a budget it's pretty decent and the engine isn't all that bad and it certainly makes up for it w/ fuel economy.

my friend recently got one of these, and i was surprised at how solid it seemed for a gm vehicle. i did find the interior disappointing - large amounts of hard plastic EVERYWHERE. but the car seems well worth the price he paid for it (after the incentives, of course). It definitely wasn't a Civic competitor, but it was light-years ahead of the Cavalier.

For a domestic car, it's a very good car. But no enthusiast would ever seriously consider one. And I don't mean to imply that the NASCAR watching Chevy fans are true enthusiasts.

You people are seriously so pathetic. When GM is in money trouble, you bash them for that, and now that they do something well, you complain about the cars? If the majority of car-buying people agreed with you, there wouldn't be all these Cobalts around. If your opinion is in the minority, shut up and let be.

BorEd hit it right on the nose when he said the SS s/c is pretty decent in the bang for the buck catagory......

Sure, refinement might not be up to Civic Si/GTI 'standards'.....but it's nowhere as near as bad as some others on the market.

As for the model line as a whole, I'm waiting until 2008 when the General's troops will prolly give the Cobalt a good overhaul/refresh .

Decent bang for the buck!!!! the SS supercharged is more expensive before options than a Civic Si or a VW GTi and i don't think it is much faster or as entertaining to drive as either of those. Ford must be kicking themselves that hey didn't bring the new focus to the US Doh!

I recently had the misfortune of driving a Pontiac Sunfire (last year made) and if the Cobalt is twice as good as the Sunfire was, then it's still a stinking POS.

All joking aside though, it's not a bad looking cheap ride. I agree with the statements about the SS model, it's pretty decent in the bang for the buck category.

I just can't get over how close in looks to the Cavalier it has. It is as if they changed the name at the last minute to Cobalt. They really need to get a new style to get away from the Cavalier.

Would I buy this over a Civic, no, but it’s not a bad car and it is far, far from a piece of junk. The focus is a piece of junk. That thing hasn’t had a major revamp since I was in middle school. I’m 19 now. The corolla is and looks to be dull as hell and the Mazda three is too hard for many people. Ah well, good for the general.

the SS s/c is a serious car. it competes in every category with the others in its class. all expect for one...interior fit and finish. While the recaro racing seats are really comfortable the rest of the interior is not up to the standards of the GTI and the like. IF they can bump it up a few notches they have a killer car on there hands. If insurance costs weren’t through the rough i would owned one. The Scion tC is comparable in nearly everyway to this car, i guess its just which one you like the lookds of more.

Scion, Yaris, Fit is too small and odd looking. Caliber is too 'out there' and Focus is a 'non-entity'.
The Chevy might not be everyone's cup of tea, but a significant number of people are buying them. Good for GM.

I don't mind the looks of the Cobalt, but I have seen the interior and driven in one and I also thought it was a piece of junk. By no means is this the "Corvettes little brother". And to me it was pretty slow and didn't have alot of oooomph. I could get a better car for a similar price. Besides for the interior, I don't mind the Cobalt but it just isn't that great of a car. Then again, what do you expect :\

I just priced one at www.chevy.com and it came in way more than a fully loaded rabbit and more than a Civic. The incentives must be good to shift it then.

Rather this than a Caliber, I always liked the look of the Cobalt and if you can get one cheap enughm why not. But it has to be cheaper than Civic and Jetta to be worth while. It even copies VWs fluid filled rear suspension bushes.
