Study: Foreign automakers to outbuild Detroit on U.S. soil by 2012

06/22/2009, 3:08 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Based on assumptions that Chrysler, Ford and General Motors will only further reduce the number of cars they build over the next three years, a study released today suggests that by 2012, foreign automakers might build more cars in the United States than Detroit’s Big Three combined.

The Big Three are expected to be assembling about 7.5 million cars annually by 2012 in the U.S., according to the Grant Thornton study, while European and Asian automakers are expected to build about 8 million cars in the country by then.

“A new order is emerging where the Detroit companies may no longer be the volume leaders in their home market,” said Grant Thornton LLP Principal Kimberly Rodriguez in a prepared statement. “Suppliers largely dependent on Detroit OEMs will have to present a new value equation to potential customers from Europe and Asia if they want to participate in the accelerated shift that is coming.”

The study cites plans by Volkswagen and BMW to double their assembly capacity, while Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai will grow their U.S. production by about 20 percent.

So 10 car companies will build more cars than 3 car companies? That crazy who would have thought something like that? I wonder how many people it took to figure that out? What are the numbers if you look at company for company and don’t let the head line make it look like American car companies are not building as many cars as foreign car companies are?

No…it’s not surprising, but it shows the general trends of foreign automakers adding production in the US while the Big 3 either stay flat or move production out of the US. Look at things 25-30 years ago…

It is a strange reversal. Honda and Toyota proved that American workers can build quality cars. It’s all in the way the companys are managed. The products coming out of the GM/Toyota joint venure plant in California prove that. The soon to be gone Pontiac Vibe is and has been the highest quality auto with a GM nameplate. Now, it’s not very exciting, but it will still be running in 5 years

ZoomerZoom, I believe NMOFGM was laid off and had to sell his computer.

Americans CAN (and do) build great cars. When we are motivated to do so, we do excellent work.

However, when we are motivated to sit on our @$$es collecting a paycheck just because someone HAS to have a certain number of people to meet some arbitrary requirement, well, the motivation to do so just flies out the window. Add to that the news of people at the top scarfing off with millions, the government wasting tax money to “save the damaged industry,” the denial of investor funds in favor of union ownership, etc., all that creates a vicious cycle that just rips the heart out of the company and watches it die with a smile on its face.

I’m going to look at the up-and-coming car companies to bring the “we build the best products” sentiment back. I think Ford may be heading there, though, so I’m watching them. Really, only time will tell.

Saying the most reliable spot n the GM lineup isnt saying anything
1959 was a long time ago. If he is telling the truth (doubt it) Im sure the car was garage kept but he will insist on saying that his “Daddy” drove that car everyday up and down the road for 50 years

The argument over “Quality” of products is often tainted by ones own prejudices toward one brand or another. I have a 2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt that has never given me any hint of trouble. Do I think it is as well made as a Honda? No, of course not.. The panel fit, quality of Interior materials etc is inferior. But when I enter a freeway onramp in 2nd gear, put my foot in it, none of that matters. That is why we are all here spending time posting. It’s the “Passion” of the automobile. Will we feel that way in 20 years driving Volts and 4 banger Buicks?????

Still in all, if da big3 [or should I say, "second group of big3, or the "former big3" or the "lil3" or the big4-5-6" or something '-) ] get and/or keep their design N quality up; then it wont matta who produces the most, jus who stays as the best seller month-to-month year-to-year. U could produce a whole lot n dont sell sh!t like chrysler’s doin now!

To my fellow US automaker fans, do not be discouraged by the continuous negative news that is disseminated daily about how bad Chrysler/GM and eventually Ford is doing. As long as we continue to support the vehicles that we enjoy and tell others who are in the market for new vehicles how exciting and reliable our cars are we will be just fine. This is a fresh start for us, as Mopar & GM fan I am excited about the new models we have to look forward to and the playing field which we have attained by purging so many of the legacy costs which held us back. Below are just a few cars that you can start telling your friends, family and co-workers to look forward to in the near future. Drive on US auto fans, I will meet you at the top.

Chrysler 200C (One sexy mid-sized sedan)
Jeep Grand Cherokee (I own 2009 SRT-8 and love it!!)
Dodge Hornet (My Next Purchase)
Dodge Circuit EV (Sexy Electric Sports Car)
Chevrolet Volt (Most Revolutionary Vehicle of this Millenia)
Chevrolet Beat (Small Inner-City Car)
Chevrolet Cruze (Very Nice Attractive Mid-Sized Sedan)
Ford Fusion (Very Nice Mid-Sized Sedan)
Ford Fiesta (Small Inner-City Car)

P.S.
This list in no way suggest that there are not excellent import vehicles out there, I am in no way a protectionist. I am just a guy who grew up loving American cars and spending weekends with my dad building them.

with sales at 27 year lows can someone explain to me why Toyota and honda would be adding 20 % to their capacity? I mean do these reporters do ANY research? The entire industry is burdened with overcapacity now.

“The current Buick Lacrosse isnt sold to anyone under the age of 55 and those SHAY D Powers studies mean nothing ”

Aside from the IS no lexus is sold to anyone under 55. What the hell is your point jackass? You have got to be one of the stupidest people I’ve ever come across. How old are you?

Coco:

Th e vibe is not the only top rated GM product with regards to quality. You are wrong. GM’s powertrain warranty lasts 5 years and yet you are stupid enough to suggest the VIBE is the only thing they make that will last 5 years. What sense does that make?

I think the Volt is significant because it is the “First Practical” alternative propulsion vehicle aimed at the common consumer. There is no other alternative Fossil-Fueled vehicle that you can buy for less than $40,000 other than the volt.

Your saying absolutely nothing new here. What US Automakers have to do is do a better job of divesting themselves in adjacent technologies that the auto industry can use. Ford is doing this, but it needs to be done much better.

MikLawry I think you got that the other way around. Ford will Beat GM to the Punch there. The Fiesta and Focus will be here before the Chevy Cruze which is kind of an after thought. I do like the Dodge EV. the Volt is ah not everything its cracked up to be. 40 miles on a charge is actually not very good when compared to 300 Mile on a Charge from Tesla.

bankrupt, his point was that the Volt is the cheapest and affordable alternative vehicle out there that can be driven like a real car. Sorry a $105k electric 2 seater car is not affordable. At least it does not fit my budget.

The Focus and Cruze are supposed to show up in the first half of next year. If the Focus is first (which I cannot confirm) it wont be by more than a couple of months. Cruze comes out April 2010.

Tesla is garbage. It costs $100k and has NO RANGE ONCE THE BATTERIES DIE. Also, C&D did a road test and could not come close to the claimed 300 mile range. Who is really going to risk running out of juice and drive the car more than 250 miles? No one.

Actually those are terrific news. Consider apparel, electronics, machining, footwear and majority of other industries that started and took industrial shape in US and went to cheaper labor markets never to come back. In auto industry we will have foreign investment utilizing US based labor. What can be better? Bankrupt domestics that we have to prop up with our taxes? They will be gone by 2012.

As with so many Americans you are gullible. There is over capacity all over the world. Why would Toyota and Honda invest in new capacity here when they have room for hundreds of thousands of units back in Japan? They are going to keep their home factories running at full tilt before they invest another dime in the US. The only factory under construction now to my knowledge is the VW factory in TN. Toyota halted its MS plant due to lack of demand and right now its an empty shell with no interior.

Ford is being propped up with your taxes? News to me.
