I have to agree with post #8.

I am waiting to see the next 300 'D' to see what direction for the Chrysler look will be in 2010. Let alone the next Ram for changing winds of truck design as shown in the Dodge Rampage.

I want Volkswagen to come out with boxy, smart MKII styles. As much as it isnt the 60's retro, it still shows some old-school veedubnessicity.

Exactly. The way I see it, the last time American companies were any good was when they were building the cars they are remaking now (retro versions of the Mustang, Camaro, GTO, Charger, Challenger, Ford GT, etc). I kind of see it as a return to true American automotive design. They are even building new cars in the old American style with cars like the 300C, Magnum, HHR, SSR, PT Cruiser, etc. Now, some of these cars you may not like, but they are undeniably American, which is a good start in the right direction. If the American companies can make it through the trouble they’ve been having lately, I believe we will see some truly great cars from them in the near future.

The new mustang is amazing... It's the only mustang I've like since the 1st generation. I think it's a modern design, but has styling cues from the most classic and bad-ass mustang ever made. Thumbs up to ford for making a mustang I might actually buy. I question their thinking when they made the fox body mustang. It had nothing in the design that said "mustang".

As far as commenting on retro styling, I think all the automakers have done a good job of integrating heritage into their new designs. They seem use some styling from the past and mix it with some modern edge. I think the "most retro" is going to be the challenger. But that said, I think American auto designers have realized the classics they had in the past and decided to build upon them. They dont have to make a car that looks completely different every 4 or 5 years, it just has to have something that is reminiscent of the original, have a V8, and be RWD. Classicly American. I predict now that the big three have brought back their classics, every few years the designs will just continue to evolve rather than keep bringing back retro. I think these cars seem retro now, but really I think the big three are just establishing what they want to build upon for the next decade. So you might think the 05 mustang looks retro now, but I doubt people are really going to think "retro" when the 09 comes out...

The new Mustang seems to be selling quite well and I personally like the "old line look". The recent car show I attended had both the Challenger and the Camaro concepts - both drew large crowds. My bet is that Chrysler will build it and GM won't.

Well, if the 05 mustang hadn't come out and the designers dug through old designs they'd have come up with new designs using the old names. Either way, the 05 mustang has the heart of a stallion, but definitely the looks of the same animals waste.

I couldn't disagree with you more, Summerwolf. Were it not for the bold statement of the '05 Mustang, the Camaro and Challenger would be nothing more than relics and distant memories. We wouldn't even be talking about them now if it weren't for J Mays and company.

the 05 mustang is the worst thing to come out of ford styling wise in a long time. The camaro concept and the new dodge concept are gourgeous cars. But they're not going to last more than a few production runs IMO and the current mustang needed a restyling before it even came out....
