Subaru has decided to develop a continuously variable automatic transmission for its entire model range, starting with the redesigned 2009 Legacy and then spreading to the rest of the Japanese carmaker’s model lineup.
The report comes from Japan’s Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, which says that the transmission will also be hooked up to Subaru’s forthcoming 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder engine. No word from Subaru on whether that engine will make it to the United States or Canada, but with the recent infusion of diesel interest here, it seems likely.

Subaru is on an endless campaign to reduce fuel consumption of its trademark boxer four-cylinder engines. Despite Subaru’s green image, boxer motors are inherently thirstier than more common inline motors.

CVTs are not new to Subaru. Several small models primarily sold in Japan and Asia feature CVTs. We’d be surprised to see Subaru put a CVT with its iconic WRX models, especially since Mitsubishi just unveiled a dual-clutch six-speed transmission for its upcoming Lancer Evolution X.
