Subaru readying new-age SVX?

10/14/2009, 11:44 AM

By Drew Johnson

Subaru may have its hands full with the development of a new entry-level coupe based on the Toyota FT-86, but that isn’t stopping the Japanese automaker from starting work on a new two-door performance car that could rival vehicles like the BMW M3.

According to Auto Express, Subaru is moving ahead with plans to produce a vehicle based on the Hybrid Tourer Concept, set to debut at next week’s Tokyo Motor Show. The car will also channel the spirit of the Subaru SVX of the early 1990s.

Power for the new-age SVX is said to be sourced from a version of Subaru’s 2.5L turbocharged boxer-four engine. Although no power figures were given, something in the 300 horsepower range seems likely.

The production Hybrid Tourer could also be one of the first Subaru vehicles to feature a hybrid drivetrain. Despite its extra emphasis on green, expect even the hybrid version of the gullwing two-door to post very decent performance numbers.

No word on when the super Subaru might hit the market, but early estimates suggest the car could carry a price tag near $60,000.

Rival in what sense? Definitely not market… I doubt someone who buys a BMW M3 is going to cross shop a Subaru.

If it’s going to be near $60k it better be damn nice, light, and handle about as good as an STi. 300hp is not a lot these days, especially if your car is AWD out of the box. Granted that’s enough power to get the STi around very nicely, but a new SVX would almost automatically be a heavier car, and the new model would have to appeal to a more upscale audience that wants refinement and good manners. I don’t see the 3 series as competition; ore like the Boxster/Cayman if you ask me.

Sounds good, I just hope they don’t have that annoying half side window like before. How about Subaru adds a turbo to their H6 engines.

Not many people fall for the Hyundai hype guy. They’re typical, low rent, cheap, tinny, unreliable imports just like the rest of them. This one will join the ranks of the embarrassing, japcrap.

Oh well, when the next C4C comes around, there’ll be more SVX’s in the mix. All those folks trading up to Chevy Equinox’s, GMC Terrains and other GM winners. Subaru dealers around here are struggling big time. Nobody drives imports in Michigan, don’tnow why they bothered trying to sell them here in the first place. This s GM Country. Say no to imports!

Funny how this comes up considering the conversation about 90’s sports cars on the FT-86 thread.

Interesting tidbit on the original SVX… Subaru did not have the financial wherewithal at the time to offer both an automatic and a manual so they had to pick one, and, as we know, they chose 2 pedals over 3. But I’ll go out on a limb and speculate that their choice of transmissions probably wasn’t the single determining factor leading to the car’s demise.

Why is it that all the new sport coupes have to be $50,000+? If they are making a 2-door STi why not price it like a STi and let the people have some choices?

Of course I think every Subaru is overpriced by about $5000 anyways…

I don’t know, I think they should do 3.6L, V6 twin turbo charge with 450hp and 500lb turque, then yeah. With 2.5L that is off from WRX STI is not what I want to be, specially compare with BMW M3.

I always thought that half window thing was kind of cool. But I never drove one of these, so I don’t really know what it would be like from the inside. I do know that when my uncle lived in the mountains in Utah, everyone there had either an Explorer or an SVX because of the AWD. At that time, it was one of the few affordable AWD “sports” cars.

I’m wondering if this SVX is the joint-venture project that was talked about earlier…

I’m thinking it is.

The SVX when it was out, was an extrememly good car. I have driven quite a few as my father works for Subaru up in Canada. I had the good fortune to be able to try these vehicles out when new. They were extremely underrated vehicles but they did have their problems. As Johnnycanuck mention they only came with an Automatic. Where he said it was budget constraints that prevented a manual transmission is wrong. At the time that the SVX was released Subaru did not have a manual transmission that would handle the power the SVX was putting out. This is why they introduced it with an automatic. The problem with this was they also had a tendancy to blow up their automatics which at the time cost $6,000 canadian to replace. The short comings aside with SVX, it was an incredible car to drive, and extremely comfortable and I would have to say stylish 2+2 sports car.

The SVX is one car I’d like to buy if I started a collection for myself. It would be fairly inexpensive to find one and it’s just a very interesting GT car. I know, people like 60’s muscle cars, but I like l ate 80’s early 90’s sports cars for myself.

The STI has some nice parts compared to the WRX, diff, 6MT, brakes, aluminum control arms, steering rack, flared fenders. I don’t think it’s worth $10k more though. I can’t see people warming up to a $60k subaru. They are supposed to be “The People’s” turbo dreamer car. Keep the pricing competitive.

For $60,000 I would hope that this Subbie would have performance on par with a GTR. Maybe thats how Subaru intends to market it, as a contender in the high price, high horse power performance market against things like GTRs and the Z06 Corvette. Maybe when I’m done with college I might be able to afford one. :)

AutoX, those Fords are mostly rentals while GM has backed off their rental sales significantly. Open your eyes and drop the Bias. Nobody is foolish enough to come to Michigan with an import knowing damn well it will be trashed. It is unAmerican to drive an import and we will let you know that.

Response: The reason Detroit is in complete and utter financial disarray is because of the crap that came out of that city and the workers that built the cars driving up costs with their ridiculous labor contracts. NMOFGM, get out of here, honestly. Nothing you have ever posted, in my recollection at least, has been anything positive. Get off your knees and stop doing Lutz a favor. Realize that there are MANY good cars out there, including American. I’ll gladly drive my 328is (which is a 1997 by the way) instead of a new cobalt for the same price.

I understand that NMOFGM is annoying, and most stuff that he posts on here should be taken with a grain of salt. But unfortunately he does have a right to post his opinion as unfortunate as that may be.

As for your comment about nobody loves GM. Out of all the cars I have owned, most have been either Chrysler made or Imports from Japan. However, the best vehicles I have owned have been made by GM. The best car I ever owned was a 2003 Chevrolet Impala. I put 230,000km (yes I am canadian) on that car and never had an issue with it… Aside from the deer hitting the front fender. I could not say the same for the imports which were generally costing me about 3000-4000 a year in maintenance. For now, I will stick with Domestic rides, as I find Imports to cost too much to buy and maintain.
