Subaru will reportedly unveil a rear-wheel drive concept car at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The show car is expected to be Subaru’s version of Toyota’s FT-86 sports coupe.

Set to be called Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Car Technology Concept, the show car will buck a Subaru staple and feature a rear-wheel drive layout. However, the concept will retain at least one signature Subaru trait – a horizontally opposed boxer engine.

Although it is widely believed that Toyota’s version of the sports coupe will feature rear-wheel drive, this is the first concrete evidence we’ve heard that the Subaru version will also be two-wheel drive. That could change for production, but it sounds as if at least one version of the Subaru-badged FT-86 will offer a very un-Subaru like rear-wheel drive.

The production version of Toyota’s FT-86 will likely debut by year’s end but, given Subaru’s version is still labeled a concept, don’t expect the Subaru coupe to debut in production form until sometime in 2012.
