Subaru takes shot at VW with new ad

04/26/2006, 12:48 PM

By admin

Subaru has used a new full-page ad to take a shot at rival Volkswagen and its “Fast” advertising campaign. The television commercials and print ads show a single shot of the Subaru WRX Sti with the caption, “When you go 0-60 in 4.7 seconds, you don’t need a made-up character called Fast. It’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.” One must wonder if Subaru was a little peeved by Volkswagen’s Unpimp Your Auto ad campaign, which mock hood scoops and spoilers. (Thanks to Drew & Kaymin for the tip!). Full image of the ad after the jump…

Perhaps Subaru should mention that the STI starts at $32,995 and the VW GTI starts at $21,990.

Maybe they should mention that for $10K less the VW’s come better equipped. And at about $28K fully loaded, that includes a NAV system, leather sports seats, DSG auto (same type of auto gear box used in the Bugatti Veyron), larger wheels, power seats, etc…

But, yes the Subaru STi is faster…and can corner better.

I think that the STi is in a whole ‘nother performance league than the GTI. As most people know, the main competition is the Lancer Evo, and overseas, the Focus RS. I think the GTI is more akin to more budget-minded Honda Civic Si, Mini Cooper S, Acura RSX Type-S, Cobalt SS, etc. This ad campaign is pretty worthless. It’s as if Chevy spent money saying the Corvette is better than the stock Mustang GT. Everybody already knows this. Besides, VW may have rallied with the old GTIs, but they don’t have a team for this new one.

I thought this was a joke ad created by a Subie fan. I don’t remember the last time a manufacturer called out another car maker’s advertising directly. It makes them seem weak and overcompromising.

So unless someone has a scan of it in a magazine. I call fake.

Suba-who? Aren’t those the guys who make pretty much the ugliest cars on the planet and try to sell what they call design as “character”? Even though I’d never buy a VW, that campaign’s just plain preposterous.

Perhaps they should mention that one of the major US auto publications did a head to head road and slalom test against a Porsche Carrara. The Subaru did as well and in a few cases did better.

Not relevent but funny nonetheless. Your GTI buyer wouldn’t be looking at an STI in the first place. GTI = a comfortable peppy FWD commuter. STI = Speed without compromise, AWD road legal race car.

While were all flaming each other, I’ll just stick my ore in and say that I have owned both a VW VR6 and Subaru WRX. The difference has been reliability.
My VW had a lot of electrical problems. Alarm coming on. Wires in the doors breaking. Engine check lights. ABS lights, cantral locking pipes leaking etc etc.
No such problems with the Subaru. Probably because it’s made in Japan and the VW was cobbled together in Mexico.
Yes the subie no oil painting. But it does work over the long haul.

Subaru does make the WRX which at $25K is in the same ballpark with the GTI and has a 2.5 turbo engine that puts out considerably more than the rated 230hp. And it’s available in both sedan and wagon, and a very comfortable yet sporty car. I don’t know why the ad had to use the STI as a comparison, but the “plain” WRX will more than compete with the GTI.

I tend to agree that since the Impreza STI’s are built in Japan, their build quality is undoubtedly better then the new Golf/GTI Mk V which is built in Mexico along with the Jetta, New Beetle and some Passats. If you compare German (or other European built) VW’s, there is a noticeable difference. Trust me, I know this from personal experience.

That said, these 2 cars are aimed at different markets and economic levels so that part of the argument here is moot..

It’s not about GTI vs. STI… It’s about “you say your brand knows fast… yeah right… we know fast… and have the numbers and not made up character to back it up.”

This hits Borders, Barnes and Noble, Hastings, Books A Million and thousands of newsstands in the first week of May. You VW cheerleaders have got to be kidding!
VW introduces all kinds of commercials that have a stuffed animal,
as the main character.
The whole objective of this creature is to supposedly make the car “fast.
And some of you go further, in saying Subaru is Jealous of VW! Please Get a Clue.

Do you all really think that VW is aiming for the buyer that wants a “plush interior
Or the buyer that wants “sophistication in an affordable package with this guy ???? NO
Aiming for the “children is more like it in this case.

Actually the last thing all these “preppy sophisticated people want to be associated with is an ugly stuffed animal.
And to all you that say that comparing a GTI to an STI is not fair due to a price difference, you all need to go to your local VW dealer, so you can see first hand that a fully loaded GTI is expensive. If you want all the options, VW is making you pay for it.

Subaru is blatantly stating the obvious, if your going to talk about “fast stick to numbers, if the “numbers aren’t the “real definition of what makes a VW so special = then stop talking about them.

A Forester XT, Legacy GT, WRX & STI all can prove to the GTI that the stuffed animal isn’t going to help them much if we are talking about “fast.

I think you guys should look at wich car can handle the most boost and horsepower for the pric. Forget about the STI how about the WRX vs. the GTI wich is the better turbo car it doesnt matter where the car is built so long as the engineering is there. I own a 05 WRX non-STI and ive been hearing alot about it not being able to go over 300hp with stock internals and it would be very exspensive to change out the internals id rather just by an sti. Now as far as Vw goes i hear theres a chip that brings it close to 280 hp with just the chip and it is possible for the gti to be brought to 400hp with stock block and internals lets look at aftermarket potential not what a car looks like. I dont know if what i read about these to cars is true or not maybe someone can shed some light,

Can’t we all just get along? I just traded in my 04 wrx (w/ some good mods) for a fully loaded MkV gti, and couldn’t be happier. If you just want to go fast, get an STI. If you don’t want to hear every rattle and creak of cheesy plastic and yell over the road noise, get a VW. The stock VW is just as fast as the wrx, and costs LESS, with better workmanship and options, but it won’t touch an sti in stock form. I think anyone who has driven both cars would agree with me, that the MKV is a nicer car. and for those of you thinking the sti isn’t touchable, for 21k you can get a base GTI, and with just a few mods, it WILL take you down and leave some $ in the bank. And for #’s, the chip I just flashed, takes my car to 265 hp and over 280 tq, and I still have 6k for fun before I touch the sti price. Now if I could just learn to launch a FWD again…… only whn I’m spinning in third do I miss the AWD…..

haha, you VW owners sound so upset, and rightfully so, if I bought a fully loaded GTi for just barely less than an STi I would be mad as well! But at least you get flashy trim on your interior… but then you got to unpimp your aaahhhttooee, OH SNAP!
