Subaru has announced it will be shifting directions with its next-generation WRX and STI models. Rather than base the performance models on the standard Impreza, Subaru has decided to give the next-generation WRX and STI models their own dedicated platform.

Subaru’s redesigned 2012 Impreza deviated from the car’s traditional formula, sacrificing power in the name of fuel efficiency. Although that move should give the Impreza a broader appeal, it’s not exactly befitting of a performance car.

As such, Subaru will move its performance-minded WRX and STI models to a new platform when the car is totally redesigned in 2013. Until then, the WRX and STI will continue on the current Impreza platform.

In addition to moving to a new platform, the WRX and STI models will also dump their “Impreza” tag following the 2013 redesign. Subaru sees the move as a way to differentiate its performance models from the more efficient Impreza.

Subaru is keeping tight-lipped on the details of its next-generation of performance cars, but indicated the WRX would carry an $8,000 premium over the regular Impreza. The Japanese automaker also promises that the STI will have at least 300 horsepower.

Subaru sold 44,395 Imprezas in the United States last year and, despite not having a WRX or STI model in the lineup, expects to best that figure in 2012. The WRX and STI typically account for 10-15 percent of Impreza sales.

Sedan and five-door versions of the 2012 Subaru Impreza will arrive in U.S. dealerships next month with a starting price of $18,245.
