Subaru to show Forester, Impreza diesels in Paris

Subaru, proud of its new diesel boxer engine that Leftlane saw in Geneva, has announced that it will show oil-burning versions of the Forester and Impreza at October’s Paris Motor Show. The Forester will be in European showrooms later in October and the Impreza is set to go on sale in early 2009.

Subaru says that the compact 2-liter, four-cylinder boxer diesel puts out 145 horsepower in the Forester and 147 in the Impreza. Torque for both is an impressive 258 lb-ft. and both will at least initially mount to a six-speed manual transmission.

The Forester is said to average 37 mpg in the European combined cycle while emitting 167g of CO2. Subaru hasn’t released figures for the Impreza other than a low emissions rating of 157g of CO2.

Used to be the horsepower numbers would be way down versus a gas engine of the same displacement, now modern diesels seem to have the best of both worlds. Too bad you still have to book a plane ticket to drive most of them.

Dear Subaru,

Please bring these to the US.

Thanks,

They couldn’t use the 5-speed because that much torque would shatter it :-)

I agree! Please, please bring these, and the Outback, and all Subarus with diesels to the US. I read that the Legacy Outback with this diesel gets around 50 mpg on the highway. We get 26 with our regular gas version so unless diesel spiked up to $7 a gallon, these would sell as fast as they could make ‘em. Even with the $2000 added fee for the diesel upgrade.

A diesel version of the H6 motor would have awesome hauling power, that could be tuned to 400lb/tq without turbocharging. Too bad Subaru no longer makes a truck to do the hauling with.
