Although Subaru’s new BRZ sports coupe will arrive sans-turbo, the Japanese automaker has confirmed that the BRZ’s 2.0L boxer-four engine will eventually get the turbocharged treatment.
According to Motor Trend, a Subaru official has confirmed that the new 2.0L engine – internally known as the FA20 – will be offered in turbocharged form. No performance figures were released, but given the mill produces 200 horsepower in naturally-aspirated form, we’d expect at least 250 horsepower – if not more – from the turbo version.
The turbocharged four-cylinder will be produced at Subaru’s Oizumi engine plant, but the engine’s future applications remain unknown. The BRZ is certainly a possibility, but Subaru has repeatedly stated that it has no plans for a turbocharged version of the sports coupe.
The next-generation WRX could be another candidate as Subaru has yet to show the performance compact. The Japanese automaker has said that it will better differentiate future versions of the WRX from the standard Impreza, and a unique, turbocharged engine could be just the thing to do that.
The new WRX could bow as early as next year, so keep watching this space.
