Subaru-Toyota sporty car joint venture delayed

02/26/2009, 10:44 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Both Toyota and Subaru have officially confirmed that their co-developed sporty compact car project has been put on hold. The two automakers had planned a rear-wheel-drive sporty two-door based on the Subaru Impreza platform that also used Subaru’s boxer engine, but the project has apparently been delayed indefinitely due to the worldwide economic slump.

Toyota gained a small stake in Subaru in 2005 and the joint project had intended to fill gaps in both automakers’ lineups. Toyota has lacked a sporty small car since the demise of the Celica and Subaru has been without a coupe for considerably longer. The small Toyota could have been badged a Scion, too.

Initially, the plan had been for the sporty coupe to be on sale in 2011 or 2012, but it looks like it has been delayed at least a year, if not longer, confirming earlier reports.

The plan for the Subaru to assemble Toyota Camrys in its Lafayette, Indiana, assembly plant remains on schedule, however.

Hmmm, not surprise here. Everything is being delayed these days. I would love to see how this would work out though.

On paper it sounds good…but in reality, when ‘Ugly’ and ‘Uglier’ has children…it can’t be good.

Yeah, who needs a small, relatively cheap RWD coupe!? That would be like gayer than a Miata! We have all the testosterone we can handle with the monsters of $20k sports cars: Chevy Cobalt SS and Golf GTI! FWD = MACHOOO! We all of course know that from the GOD of all macho cars: the 90s Caddy DeVille!!!
/sarcasm
People can be such dicks! If Alfa Romeo puts out a new car, people b1tch about it being italian and not reliable! When Toyota joins Subaru to build a small RWD Coupe for the enthusiasts, people bitch about it being ugly without even seeing it!

yarddog, Toyota doesn’t need a ’super’ car, leave that for Lexus and the LF-A. Toyota needs something that’s not quite a Genesis but more than an tC.

That said I guess the rebirth of the MR2 is now completely out of the question.

hell Johnny at this point I’d settle for the afterbirth of the MR2.

This is probably for the best with the 2010 Mustang GT and the new Camaro on the horizon. This car would have just been an embarrassment for Toyota and Subaru compared with the aforementioned autos.

Triton, the people who buy Pony cars and the people who buy compact RWD Sports Imports are an ENTIRELY different group of people. There won’t by much cross-shopping anyway.

How about us poor europeans? Apart from the slow and cheap Mx-5 and the more expensive and very rare Opel GT, we don’t have any “cheap” RWD coupes… I want that Toyota/Subaru! I don’t want the King of Bland, the Master of Boring Design that is the Golf GTI!

Sucks. I was really looking forward to that car coming out. An AWD varient with a Subaru badge, packing an STi engine and driveline would have been awesome. A RWD one would have been all good too.

I was kind of hoping to see maybe the revival of the supra with Subaru equipment but guess that out.

Nobody would buy one of these unreliable pieces of sh1t anyways. Toyota and Subaru are the biggest sh1tboxes out there. Everyone is waiting for the new Camaro to clean house and kick a$$!
