SEMA 2009: Subaru unveils TRAX STI with matching sleigh

11/03/2009, 2:00 PM

By Andrew Ganz

At the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas, Subaru took to the stage with a wild concept created in parternship with Vermont SportsCar: The TRAX STI, which features Mattracks rubber tracks.

Designed to be the ultimate accessory for a snowboarder – and his friends – the concept also comes with a matching “sleigh” capable of hauling four friends in seat-heated, open-air comfort.

The concept car, based on a WRX STI, pumps out about 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. of torque. A number of upgrades helped prepare it for more serious use. Vermont SportsCar added a custom FIA-spec roll cage, Recaro seats and STI Group N Gravel Rally Brakes. The powertrain was dropped three inches to accommodate the tracks system.

Don’t expect the TRAX STI to make production, of course.

Now that’s different. Wonder if they’ll be taking it around Killington or Stowe this Winter…

Complete overkill, but utterly awesome. Can this be in the next James Bond movie?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess the trail down the side of the mountain wasn’t the only thing being blazed when they came up with this idea.

I’m sure you’d see more Mattracks if they were good for prolonged highway use. Those are just awesome mods.

Ken is living the dream of every rally fan and it keeps getting better and better. He grew up an average skater kid in suburbs, 4 years ago he was just getting his feet wet in motorsports. Now he is the face of Gymkhana, has a new vid game (Dirt 2), a chance in WRC next year, iconic status in US and Europe. Only in America!

I just left the show for the night and this is by far the coolest thing I saw all day. Awesome.
