Subaru WRX gets redesigned front for Australia

07/30/2007, 12:24 PM

By Andrew Ganz

The Subaru WRX’s egg-crate front grille has caused a lot of controversy among enthusiasts and the media alike. Now comes word that when the WRX goes on sale soon in Australia, the market Down Under will get its own unique front end with a mesh grille.

It’s expected that the mesh grille will wind up on North American WRXs shortly – in fact, a Subaru executive was seen driving a WRX with the mesh grille in Los Angeles recently.

That is like putting lipstick on a raccoon to pretty it up for the dance. Let’s face it the ghastly WRX needs major surgery and nothing else!

Whatever. It doesn’t change the fact that the car will feel like a 70s Fiat after it has 30,000 miles on it. Creak, rattle and roll.

I’m getting fed up with manufacturer’s not getting it right the first time. Is it really that hard? Do you see Mazda performing redesigns on their line up?

the aftermarket will supply mesh grilles even if we dont get them, its not like any douchebag will keep their car stock, fart cans everywhere

Better, but anything is better than the original front grille. People aren’t douchebag if they don’t keep their cars stock. I dislike fartcans myself, but it’s their cars! People like A4 who are intolerant are the douchebags. Stop trying to control everyone else. Mind your own business.

I agree with sharpie. I’m sick and tired of the idiots on this site who do nothing else but lament and bitch about what other people do with their cars. Besides, if you’d never modify your car, why bother to waste time commenting about it? It’d be really funny to actually find out exactly what some of these bastards drive. I dunno, maybe they’re just jealous.

I think it looks better, by the way. I’ve never been a Subaru fan, but WRX’s go like stink… mesh grilles, fart cans and all.

Maximus I love me some Fiat, especially the Spider when they remove the bumpers, it looks so spot on. A Fiat 131, on the other hand, will have the structural integrity of house made of popsicle sticks.

This one looks better than that ugly rice patty we’ll get here. And meanpants, I know exactly what you mean – but mine took 50K miles before the severe shakes & rattles!

Maximus’ 1976 Fiat Spider with 34,000 miles has been that way with that many miles since 1979 which was the last year he managed to get it to start.

the grill is a start, Stuparu. Now please get on with redesigning the other 99% of your Edsel.

It always seems like Subaru never quite got the WRX styling right. The bug-eye headlights had to go. The aero-inspired grille didn’t do anything for me, but I have to say that the new design takes a huge step backward in my book. Compared to the new Lancer/Evo re-skin, the WRX doesn’t even get a second glance in my book.

It’s still ugly and Subarus are unreliable POS. At least they could have added a touch of class like the Chevy HHR. Plus Subarus interiors leave a lot to be desired, my Legacy is a prime example. Look at a Pontiac G6 or Malibu interior an then look at a Subaru and its night and day.
