Delphi has announced preliminary acceptance results of the UAW-GM-Delphi Hourly Special Attrition plan. Under the provisions of the plan, approximately 12,600 UAW-represented employees have elected one of the retirement options available under the plan. “We are pleased with the strong employee interest in the attrition plan,” said Lindsey Williams, Corporate Affairs Manager. That puts the total number of GM and Delphi workers to accept buyouts and early retirement at over 47,000 — far exceeding most expectations. Yesterday evening, we reported that a third of GM’s workforce — 35,000 people — had taken the deals. That puts GM’s restructuring two years ahead of schedule, company officials say. As a result, GM could save $3.9 billion annually, according to published reports. Delphi — which declared bankruptcy last year — will also likely save a great deal of money, thanks to the departure of many workers.
