British drivers talking on mobile phones or failing to wear seatbelts could find themselves tracked down through a widened use of road surveillance cameras, under proposals due to be floated in parliament tomorrow, reports The Guardian. The case is made by an “independent adviser” named Robert Gifford who argues the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology should be applied in new ways to help pay for cameras and to catch offenders. He claims such measures would be for “the greater good of society” and represent only a “slight reduction of our liberty.”
