Suzuki CEO shoots down VW investment rumors

06/30/2009, 8:58 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Suzuki CEO Osamu Suzuki says that the Japanese automaker has held no discussions with Volkswagen over a small car alliance with investment from the German automaker. Last week, reports out of Japan had indicated that Volkswagen was looking into acquiring a 10 percent stake in the struggling Suzuki.

“So far there’s been absolutely no contact (with Volkswagen),” Osamu Suzuki told Chunichi Shimbun. “Lately, we’ve been the victim of a lot of rumors.”

However, when queried by Reuters, Suzuki’s spokesperson could not confirm the CEO’s statements.

Suzuki’s small car sales continue to prosper, but the rest of its units are generally struggling worldwide.

Is it just me or does Suzuki seem a bit grumpy? I would have thought, true or not, it would be a positive thing in terms of a larger auto maker having interest in what Suzuki has to offer…

Makes sense that VW/Porsche/Audi group would want a cheaper platform for inexpensive line up. VW’s are awful expensive for a small vehicle.
