i also had a 89 GTi and loved it. no, its not faster than my big block dodge charger but it was a blast to drive and a 8500RPM shift is an incredible sound, and no i didn't have a fart tip on mine. the sound of the motor itself is what i'm talking about, not the exhaust. I keep hoping they will bring it back but if it doesn't have the raw feeling the first one did it would be very sad. I was smoking CRX and geo storm drivers every day with that little thing (i took all the badges off and put geo metro tail lights in it, they never knew what hit them:):):). I took it to germany in the military and really loved it over there. my 89 model was actually a 90 model over there, found that out when we ordered parts. There was a company making them into convertibles in Stuttgart but i didn't have the money. I wish the internet was more widespread when i had it so i could of known more about the turbos and stuff that other countries were getting for them, would of made it even better. I haven't seen one up close in 15 years though, would love to find one that was still in good shape

Great news. The Swift is an excellent small car, my cousin has one and it's still running perfectly, no problems whatsoever. Good move, Suzuki!

My 1.3L G13B 16V 1989 Swift GTi is a screamer. Even with 130k, it pulls hard and really howls. It doesn't have much torque down low, but once past 3000rpm it sings right to 6500. You have to row gears to keep it in the "happy band", but if the new car has any of the raw visiral driving experience of the origional '89 pocket rocket, it'll be a big, big winner.

The Swift Gti when new in '89 was one tenth of a second faster 0-60 than the Porsche 944 of the same year. And it did that with only 100hp.

Suzuki = Big fun, low cost.

Paint:Yes.... my mother in law does NOT wax(ever) her vehicles, and maybe rinses the Tracker once or twice per year, if needed. So, yes, bad care= bad paint.
The 90 Tracker, red.... was traded in 1999, and had 217K+ miles, no faded paint, nothing wrong.
He just got nervous(father in law) about how much longer would it last( it was not acting up, but when he hit 200K, he started getting panicky, for no good reason...guess the 87 Toyota pickup he had, with new tranny, made him nervous about the Tracker, and it's higher mileage?).
Anyhow, to be honest, if I had to pick between a 400 dollar pain job, ot a 3,500 dollar tranny put in? 400 dollar paint job wins.;-)
Mechanically... the Trackers were solid as Granite!
Nothing ever wrong.
That impresses me more than worrying about paint.
Paint chips from rocks(gravel drives, or in winter, around here in snow country, gravel on the roads, mixed with road salt= not good, year after year after year).

Oh,the SX4? Has clearcoat.
Should last.
Inlaws do not really baby their vehicles, either.
Driving into a foot+ deep snowbank, to prove you can go trhough it...in a Tracker, is not "not abusing" a Tracker(suzuki).Never washing it, but maybe 1-2 times in the Summer(and no wax), is abusing your vehicle, too.

The fact his Jeep grand Cherokee Lardeo tranny died at 107,000, an the Toyota at 157K...and the Tracker never, means something, to me, anyways.Again, 400 dollars for paint, or 3,500-4000 for a tranny? The 400 dollar "repairs" after 11 years wins! ;-)
As I said, I am Not a fan of their decontenting the interiors, though( hope whatever they repalce the Forenza/Reno with is on par of content today, and then some..then, I will seriously look).

take care/not offense.

Potential Aveo/G3 replacement, perhaps? I'm sure Suzuki would jump at the chance to produce a volume car for GM, even under different badges. They'd make a ton of money.

Faded paint makes it all better! Pull up next to that eurotrash poser at the stoplight in your tuned Suzi beater and blowing his doors off is a cheap, juvenile thrill that will never, ever get old.

Better hope they import the Swift Sport - the regular Swift is OK but it's the Sport model that gets people going gaga...125 horespower, 400 pounds lighter than a Mini Cooper.

The engine in teh Swift Sport is rally-bred (same as in the Super1600 Swift rally car) so it will be rock solid and tunable up to 200hp with the right mods or a bolt on turbo even.

For under $20k, this car could teach alot of North Americans why corners are your friend.

Purdue, they are painted with single stage paint meaning no clear coat so if you don't keep them waxed they do indeed fade....I guess you could call it cheap but it's on a cheap car too.

Yea, if their collaboration with FIAT brings anything this good, I'd say work together on other models as well. The driving dynamics is so European but with a high revving Japanese engine and a nice thick sport steering wheel. The GT's front is totally copied from Audi A4, but it looks nice so who cares...

That's GREAT news! This current generation of Swift is a true pocket rocket that I actually prefer driving over the 3 series, C Class, or any other Germans save an A4. Launching to 65 mph on the second gear with a European-like back suspension, this is truly a car that puts a smile on your face. And it's a lot cheaper than anything Mazda puts out. Just make sure to get the GT version.

Facts: The "Chevy" Tracker, was a Suzuki. Inlaws had a 1990 Tracker(Suzuki), 217K miles, ZERO issues.
They still have a 1997 Suzuki(Sorry, "Chevy") Tracker....91,000, Zero Issues(some fading paint on the hood, but mechanically, Solid as day 1).

1987 Toyota truck(inlaws also had)...needed a new tranny at 157,000 miles. had the truck 274K miles, though(note: Suzuki had No Issues over 200K, where as their 87 needed a tranny).

I have owned GM Nissan Scion(Toyota) tC, and Hyundai, inlaws Mazda protege, Ford Taurus(brother in law),
Long story short: Nothing Like a Suzuki for reliability!

They got a SX4 "suv", (in October 14th,06, IIRC, a Saturday, out in Munice, Indiana)/
17K miles in 6 months... 28-29MPG, Zero issues.

I will admit, the Tracker = Tractor, to me, in NVH, but reliability is superb.
The SX4= as good as anything else.

The SX4 sedan is supposed to be "fast and fun", and out in the Fall.
I do not care for the "decontenting" of it(from what I have seen of the interior... no center console/armrest, for example, but cars like Mazda3, Scion tC, etc, have them. Surely, putting in an armrest/console for front passengers would not "hurt" this "Sporty" SX4. hasn't hurt the others who put them in).

The Swift? On about any other site, people go nuts at the mention of it!
Must be soemthing to it!?
Read Suzuki dealers in the USA turned it down, thus, the reason for No Swift here.
Dealerships:
One place opened a year ago. They have a habit of opening new dealerships ONLY when they feel they will make $$$$, for the long term.
They opened a Hyundai dealership the exact same month(March 1999) when the 10/100K warranty started. I figured they would be closed in 5 years. Guess what? They are still around, 8 years+ later!
Doing great, also!
They opened Suzuki. Guess what? Doing great!
There are 3 dealerships within 40 miles(like other Imports), and 2 more within a 75 mile drive, for a total of 5.
5 years ago, there was only 1.

If they continue to decontent cars, though, I won't consider a Suzuki for our next car( plus, they need to tweak the MPG.31MPG for Reno? Not good.).

They fix the MPG, 0-60 times( the SX4 the inlaws have hits 60 in under 10 seconds with automatic, and it is around 2,900lbs),and stop the decontenting(of the interior).... we'll see.

Facts: The “Chevy” Tracker, was a Suzuki. Inlaws had a 1990 Tracker(Suzuki), 217K miles, ZERO issues.
They still have a 1997 Suzuki(Sorry, “Chevy”) Tracker….91,000, Zero Issues(some fading paint on the hood, but mechanically, Solid as day 1).

1987 Toyota truck(inlaws also had)…needed a new tranny at 157,000 miles. had the truck 274K miles, though(note: Suzuki had No Issues over 200K, where as their 87 needed a tranny).

I have owned GM Nissan Scion(Toyota) tC, and Hyundai, inlaws Mazda protege, Ford Taurus(brother in law),
Long story short: Nothing Like a Suzuki for reliability!

They got a SX4 “suv”, (in October 14th,06, IIRC, a Saturday, out in Munice, Indiana)/
17K miles in 6 months… 28-29MPG, Zero issues.

I will admit, the Tracker = Tractor, to me, in NVH, but reliability is superb.
The SX4= as good as anything else.

The SX4 sedan is supposed to be “fast and fun”, and out in the Fall.
I do not care for the “decontenting” of it(from what I have seen of the interior… no center console/armrest, for example, but cars like Mazda3, Scion tC, etc, have them. Surely, putting in an armrest/console for front passengers would not “hurt” this “Sporty” SX4. hasn’t hurt the others who put them in).

The Swift? On about any other site, people go nuts at the mention of it!
Must be soemthing to it!?
Read Suzuki dealers in the USA turned it down, thus, the reason for No Swift here.

I like the concept behind the SX4. The rally concept that was shown a year or two back was beautiful. It's too bad the car brought the market in the US instantly fell into the "old foogies" car bin. The huge windows made it look far less sporty than I'm sure Suzuki meant.

It really could have been the WRX or Evo for the budget strapped. But the new version looks better, and I hope this new swift really is as hot as the racers overseas would have us believe. I doubt a fully loaded racing rig would be sold in America, but then, most of us never believed that Nissan would ever ship the GT-R for sale in the US.

I'm looking forward to both Suzuki cars with great curiosity.

If the Chevrolet Aveo is any indication of what a class leading subcompact stands for, then you should all have high hopes for this new Suzuki. General Motors acquisition of Daewoo motors is really starting to payoff.

Seriously, gents, this car looks better than a Yaris, Fit, or Versa, looks more practical than a Mazda 2, and is very likely built better than a Polo, and is a hoot to drive. It'll certainly come in a good deal cheaper than a new Civic Si (which looks like it's suffering from Downs syndrome anyway) so WTF - bring it over, Screwlooseski!

Suzuki SX4 was developed together with FIAT Auto and is the same car as FIAT Sedici. Sedici is Italian for Sixteen. And Euro version of SX4 is made at the same factory in Hungary as FIAT Sedici, 40,000 is SX4 and 20,000 is Sedici. In Europe SX4 is available in FWD with 1.5-liter engine (99hp), AWD version has 1.6-litre with 107hp and 1.9-liter TurboDiesel with 120hp.

As an owner of a 16v GTi Swift I think it's pretty cool, and about damn time. My little beater GTi is a blast to rip around in, and I'm sure the new one will be even more so. I've been waiting for this headline since the new swift sport reviews I read from topgear and other sources. Now what's the deal with 2010????

Last I heard, GM sold 17% of its 20% Suzuki stake, so they're down to a 3% stake. That Swift has this resemblance to the new Sentra Se-R. AND Suzuki's getting its version of the Frontier pickup. Why does Nissan allow itself to be raped by Suzuki? And if I was in charge of GM, I throw that last 3% stake in Suzuki back in Suzuki's stupid face. Suzuki pisses me off!
