Swedish government holding off on Saab, Volvo loans

11/24/2008, 4:42 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Sweden’s government announced earlier today that it is waiting to see what, if any, action the United States will take with General Motors and Ford before it offers any money to help out the two Sweden-based brands, Saab and Volvo. Sweden’s small car industry has been entirely owned by Detroit since 2000 when GM took full control of Saab.

“What will Ford and GM do? Will Ford and GM move forward with Saab and Volvo? Will they develop new car models?” Swedish Enterprise Minister Maud Olofsson told journalists.

Sweden is waiting to see if United States investment in GM and Ford will lead to further investment in Saab and Volvo. Olofsson said that any monetary assistance from the government would come in the form of research and development money because anything else would conflict with European Union competition legislation.

More pressure on Detroit. Everyone’s looking to a country that’s a couple trillion dollars in debt already…

Check out this website for great information about the US budget and debt. http://www.federalbudget.com/

Please notice that the largest item on the budget is hand-outs to people who don’t pay taxes to begin with. These are not loans, these are hand outs. They are taking my money, and giving it to drug addicts with 4 kids. I would rather get that drug addict a job with health insurance and insure that they become a productive member of society, not continue to be a pariah.

The auto makers are not asking for a hand-out a-la the druggie. They are asking for a loan, which they will repay with interest. I still don’t get why people insist that we’re giving away tax payer dollars to the automakers.

It sucks that we have to pay for vaccines for Kids and old people and, School meals to kids in school. That just bites. I hate that we have to help the poor and disable in our communities. Those blood suckers.

Elviososa- I’m not sure on this, but I think it’s because their not obligated to post costs of the Iraq war on there. Correct me if I’m wrong.

t-ak-box- Although that’s a little bit of an exaggeration, we do pay a lot of money to people who DO have five or six kids, no job and little responsibility.

And I’d like to see Saab and Volvo stick around. Well, maybe not Volvo. Saab’s always fitted a nice little niche up till now since GM’s diluted their brand pretty well. Volvo’s just lost it a long the way… although they do have a number of good cars out right now.

Even after all the dumbing-down and volume-chasing Volvo has suffered at the hands of Ford, Volvo is still a purer brand than Saab. At least Ford didn’t pull Explorers and Mazda 3s out of stock, slap new bumpers on ‘em, and claim they were genuine Volvos. GM murdered Saab. “Born from jets,” my eye.
