Sweden’s government announced earlier today that it is waiting to see what, if any, action the United States will take with General Motors and Ford before it offers any money to help out the two Sweden-based brands, Saab and Volvo . Sweden’s small car industry has been entirely owned by Detroit since 2000 when GM took full control of Saab.

“What will Ford and GM do? Will Ford and GM move forward with Saab and Volvo ? Will they develop new car models?” Swedish Enterprise Minister Maud Olofsson told journalists.

Sweden is waiting to see if United States investment in GM and Ford will lead to further investment in Saab and Volvo. Olofsson said that any monetary assistance from the government would come in the form of research and development money because anything else would conflict with European Union competition legislation.
