Tata investigates Nano eletrical fires

10/26/2009, 1:15 PM

By Drew Johnson

In order to make the Nano the world’s cheapest car – with a sticker price of about $2,500 – Tata Motors undoubtedly had to make quality sacrifices in almost every area of the tiny city car. However, some of those cuts have apparently come back to bite Tata as three Nano owners have reported electrical fires.

According to The Times of India, at least three Tata Nano owners have reported electrical fires. The fires appear to be the result of an electrical short in the car’s steering column. No injuries have been linked to the default, with all three cases occurring when the ignition switch was in the ‘off’ position.

Tata has already inspected two of the vehicles, with the third vehicle expected to be given the once over in the coming days. Tata has also inspected several other Nano models but has yet to announce an official recall.

“We do not believe that this is generic and we are not considering any recall. However, a pre-emptive check may be carried out on cars that are to be handed over or those that are with customers, purely as a precautionary measure,” a spokesman for Tata Motors told The Times of India.

While electrical fires are never good thing, the Nano’s cases are especially concerning as Tata plans to sell the Nano in other world markets. The Nano is expected to go on sale in Europe early next decade with a version likely earmarked for the U.S. market in the coming years.

Surprise, surprise! I hope this death-trap never makes it to North America. In India, where they have a population problem, that’s another story…

^ According to some people, we have a population problem here, too. ^

I’m not one of those people.

Still, electrical fires?

Speaking of recalls… if a Nano was ever victim to unintended acceleration do you think the driver would even notice? Maybe Toyota could swap issues.

LOL johnny, if the nana had acceleration problem people can just hop out of the car, its not like it can go fast…

Sounds like North America will be saying, “Ta ta” to Tata, before it even gets here. And Robin Williams will say, “Nano nano, Nano.” And none of us will be saying, “Nice Tatas” at the showroom. Help me out, here, johnnycanuck. I’m fresh out of funny.

The electrical fires are not caused by onboard electricity but rather by static generated when kids pick up the Nano, rub it on their hair, and stick it to the wall.

So when someone driving a Nano gets pulled over for speeding (…work with me here kids) and the cop says ‘where’s the fire’ boy is he going to be surprised.

I can see the US marketing launch campaign now. Maybe Lutz can join the company and help out

“Put a little spark in your life. Buy a Nano”

“Nano – An electrifying ride”

“Announcing the new Nano Tata RutRoh edition”

Or the new Tata Customer Support hotline

Press 1 to report a fire ………….
Press 2 to report ever hitting 50 MPH

I’m sorry. I just can’t take a car that has seatbelts as an option seriously. Could you imagine this car in the states? Like if Tata came up with the crazy idea of selling this beefed up go-kart in the United States. I think only……..waitaminute…….who would buy this car? I don’t even think the bums here in New York City would buy it if they were given the money.

Zesty,
If I could have my way with this thing, I could turn it into a monster! Say hello to my Hayabusa Tata =)
People who buy this thing won’t be buying it for the same reason that people in india buy them, they will get them to beat them up and have fun! 2500 for a car is nothing! thats only 300 bucks more than my MBP!

I really hope none of the “engineering” that went into the Tata trickles over to Landrover or Jaguar. Bean counting mentality always screws things up in the long run.

johngalt – LOL

leftwingagenda – agree, so you park itin the garage turn “off” the ignition and it will burn your house down, truly impressive.

footdoc67 – don’t worry Jaguar’s are use to “electrical” issues, their wires have built extinguishers.
Landrover – it will only burn off the skin which will be a opportunity to create something that looks good.

23″ phat spinners, underglow, purple headlights, green tail lights, hydraulics, interior LED bars, a double spoiler, some ground effects, four screen DVD player, a PlayStation, a Wii, an earth shaking stereo and a fart can. Oh, yeah, Tata Nano is hitting the aftermarket, baby! Just the stereo system would cost more than the car. Nice.

I mean for what your paying for your lucky it runs for 6 months to a Year before needing to be replace and that is if you survive. I think its a death trap underpowered motor, THE NANO could be squashed as easy as a Tin CAN. a MotorCycle is better at safety than this thing and that is not saying much

That’s India for you. Absolutely very little to no safety standards over there. Doesn’t surprise me that something like this would happen over there.

Of course, it doesn’t help matters much that India is an absolute haven for corrupt politicians, policemen, and businessmen.

The owners were probably trying to install stereos…so they could actually listen to music while driving.
