Tata Motors may have moved up-scale with the purchase of the Land Rover and Jaguar brands, but the Indian automaker still has a strong focus on inexpensive motoring. As such, Tata announced on Thursday that it will be boosting production of its Nano to keep up with growing demand.
The Tata Nano is currently the world’s cheapest car and is starting to build a strong following in its home market of India. The Nano isn’t flying off lots at a record pace – due somewhat to initial production limitations – but the city car has been selling at a healthy rate of about 2,500 units per month.
“In the last three months, we have been averaging about 2,500 Nano (sales) per month,” Rajiv Dube, head of the company’s passenger car business, told Reuters.
“We are gearing up for a higher number and we are ramping up our production capacity by 20 percent from this month.”
Tata expects Nano sales to top 3,000 units per month after the production increase, with that figure set to steadily increase for the foreseeable future.
