Tata to launch Nano in late March

02/26/2009, 9:36 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Tata Motors will finally launch its much-delayed, inexpensive small car, the Nano, late next month, the automaker says. Months of delays at its production facility in India have pushed back the sub-$2,000 car’s introduction, but the automaker says that it will officially launch the car on March 23 and allow potential buyers to place orders shortly thereafter.

“The cars will be on display at Tata dealerships from the first week of April,” the company said in a statement.

The Nano could come at just the right time for Tata, which has been suffering at least as much as the rest of the global auto industry thanks to the massive downturn in sales experienced worldwide.

Tata first displayed the Nano at the Delhi Auto Show in January 2008. The car was supposed to go on sale in October, but violent protests at the location Tata initially planned to use for its production facility forced the automaker to move its factory.

it is POS by our standards (or by any other for that matter). But if you ever saw original FIAT 500 or BMW Izetta it was not any better. Those vehicles for a specific market. In India top speed or 1-60 is not an issue. Pot holes and donkey avoidance at speed of 10 mph is.

Borat, I think it’s more about circumnavigating through the sacred cows and wandering gurus.. LOL.

This car is marketed to people in India who ride their motorcycle with 5 people on board. (How they balance the cycle to get started I don’t know)

Even this tiny car is better than a cycle in the rain or cold….or a crash.

this thing ( i refrain from calling it a car) may not be good looking, it may not have a good engine or high build quality (not sure about this, though, only seen it in pictures), but it will for sure sell like hotcakes in india and other emerging markets, where people – exactly as get real said – are riding motorcycles that look like their a hundred years old, with 5 people or more on board, and transporting their days harvest of hay or whatever home while sweeping around potholes… we all started little, and i hear the model t wasnt the best ride around, either… but it got america started into the the car-age

This is a great car for the purpose.
In the USA, we’d probably prefer a decent used car

jackjim, great call. This thing might sell in Florida communities where people ride around on $3000 golf carts all day. I’d rather have this car than a golf cart.
