Indian automaker Tata Motors has finally found a home for the Nano minicar’s assembly plant – near Ahmedabad in the western India state of Gujarat. Violent protests over forced land acquisition by the Indian government earlier this year forced Tata to change its plans of producing the Nano in West Bengal. The $416.6 million facility will produce up to 300,000 Nanos every year.
Should demand outpace production capabilities, Tata will allocate space at its existing factories in Pune and Pantnagar, reports the Associated Press.
Tata will eventually hire up to 10,000 workers to fill the assembly plants and it will house most of them on 1,100 acres in Sanand, outside Ahmedabad, a common practice at Indian factories.
No specific details were released regarding how Tata acquired the land, only that it was purchased at market rates. The clashes in West Bengal escalated after farmers found out they would lose their land.
