Tazzari to produce all-electric ZERO city car

10/07/2008, 1:43 PM

By Drew Johnson

Italy’s Tazzari has teamed up with the NICE Car Company to develop an all-new electric city car. Dubbed the Tazzari ZERO, the new electric car won’t challenge the Tesla Roadster for all-out electric car performance, but does promise zero emissions motoring for those confined to tight city living.

Although production plans aren’t exactly crystal clear, the ZERO seems to make compromises in all the right placing, making for an efficient package for city dwellers. Thanks to a compact two-door design and the extensive use of lightweight materials, the ZERO checks in at less than 1,200 pounds. That light curb weight ensures an all-electric range of nearly 100 miles – more than enough for most city commuters.

Acceleration isn’t jaw dropping, but a 4.5 second 0-50 km/h time should be more than adequate for any buyer shopping an electric city car. Top speed is said to be about 56 mph.

Charging time is the ZERO’s strong point, with a full charge taking just 45 minutes – well short of most electric cars’ need for a full 8 hours of plug time. That short charge time can be attributed to the ZERO’s advanced lithium-ion batteries.

No official word of when the Tazzari is expect to hit the market, but look for the EV city car to be available in France, England and Italy when it finally does make production.
