Technology aims to reduce hit-and-runs

10/06/2005, 2:00 PM

By admin

A new technology promises to help catch hit-and-run drivers, and possibility discourage drivers from fleeing an accident in the first place. The proposal would equip all cars with a short-range transmitter that would transmit the VIN numbers of the cars involved to each other’s receiver. To address any privacy concerns, the RFID product chosen for this application has a maximum “read range” of only eight inches. This is to ensure it’s information cannot be obtained by a passing car or at a stationary checkpoint–such as a toll booth, for example. The response to the technology has been “overwhelming” according to the company. “We would like to thank the law enforcement agencies, state (and local) governments, companies and organizations who have visited us.”
