Tesla delivers first batch of Roadsters in California

07/14/2008, 6:10 PM

By Drew Johnson

Tesla’s all-electric Roadster has seen its fair share of setbacks over the past few months, but it looks as though the worst is behind the Lotus-based sports car as the first four paying customers in California have taken delivery of their Roadsters.

In all, nine Roadsters have been built, with the remaining five cars set to be delivered to customers later this week. Tesla plans to build the $100,000 Roadster at a clip of four units per week for the foreseeable future.

In another bit of good news for the electric automaker, Tesla has opened its second dealership in as many months. Joining the company’s first dealership in Los Angeles, the new dealership is located in Menlo Park – right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Tesla plans to open its next four stores in New York, Chicago, Miami and Seattle.

So for $100,000 I can’t even leave LA? I’d have to rent a car to drive to Vegas, or even Santa Barbara for that matter. Hmmm, I really don’t see that as a value proposition, sorry.

Sorry I am an ignorant Brit, what’s the distance between LA and Vegas and why would there be nowhere to stop and charge the car in between?

I’m failing to understand the allure for this car. You could buy a real Lotus instead, and enjoy the high revving Toyota 4 instead of the listless hum of an electric motor. That’s what’s lost on me.

^^^It will differentiate the owner more then S class in LA & NYC. It is based on Lotus and apparently has the same driving dynamics and performance characteristics.

Clean GTO = i completely agree with you. My Sister and her ex boyfriend split the cost for an Exige in 2007 and by far it was one of the most fun cars to be in .

the Tesla is a great concept, quick electric motor and all, but come onnnnn… you can’t put a Tubi exhaust on it.

you are going to need like grooved belts and hollow gears to make noise.
