Tesla Motors is best known for its revolutionary all-electric Roadster, but the California-based upstart automaker will likely be known for its incredible vehicle designs in just a few years. That’s because Tesla has managed to snag designer Franz von Holzhausen away from Mazda .
Even if you’re not familiar with von Holzhausen, you’re familiar with his work. Most recently von Holzhausen held the position of Director of Design at Mazda’s R&D Design Center in Irvine, California where he oversaw the design of all of Mazda’s North American vehicles –- including production and concept vehicles — according to Car Design News. Von Holzhausen created the Nagare and Furai concepts, and played a key role in the development of the Ryuga, Hakaze and Taiki concepts.
Von Holzhausen’s resume also includes stints at Volkswagen and General Motors. During his time at VW, Holzhausen worked on the Concept One and Microbus concepts and he was also responsible for the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky while at GM.
The acquisition of Holzhausen shows that Tesla is getting serious about the designs of its future lineup. While Tesla already has its electric Roadster on the market, it was completely designed by Lotus .
