I know this sounds crazy but why don't we use good manners and give everyone our upmost respect no matter what the issue. You know peace on earth and good will towards men.

Just a thought.

johnnycanuck - it's an issue of respect, that's all. i'm not shoving anything down anyone's throat, i'm just asking that people respect my beliefs and the God that i serve. anyone on this forum who says the Lord's prayer ("hallowed be thy name" - means "let your name be respected") and means it would want the same thing.

i don't go around hating on other people's beliefs, man. check my past comments if you doubt that.

Problem is battery technology has not changed since Edison invented them.

The materials have changed, but the basic theory is the same.

Something new has to be invented and called an "electricity storage device".

One thing about the technology behind electric and hybrid cars, they will only last as long as there batteries. With this car I don't think it will be a big deal but with cars for the masses it will be like replacing the engine in a gas powered car every x-amount of miles in this day and time.

The three big problems I see with electric powered cars today is,

1- The building and disposing of the battery
2- The price of the battery
3- The overall performance and durability of the battery

Of course these things will only hurt the resale value and therefore leave current owners with nowhere to go when the car battery eventually wears out.

Don't get me wrong, I believe America can do anything we put our minds to but lately we’ve been doing everything haft-assed for the dumbest reasons.

"CVT's can be extremely strong, auto manufacturers just haven't chose to invest in them."

Actually Jjacyco08 I happen to know a few things about CVT's Both you and CA36GTP are partly right. CVT's aren't the most durable transmissions, however they can be strong when they are made right. Despite being made right CVT's can't handle extremely high speeds or very fast exceleraion. We don't have the technology to accomadate in the algorithms of accomadating for very quick exceleration ratios for CVT's to handle. GM was working on a CVT and If I'm correct some of the previous generation Saturn VUE's had the CVT. Well if any of you drove the VUE's that had the CVT, GM who typically is known for their tranny's didn't come up with the best CVT, the CVT changed gears when it seemed the RPM's weren't high enough and it just seemed to shift whenever it wanted to. It resulted in an anything but smooth ride. So when my parents leased an 04 Vue they opted for the standard 5spd that is no longer available on the VUE. However from what I've heard, the CVT's that Nissan and Honda offer are very smooth. Unfortunately as of right now for the performance that the Tesla roadster is capable of a CVT won't work for it unless it's heavily devoloped. Better stick with the two-speed.

no, they'd replace all of the cars that would already have the one-speed transmission in it. 'with' is being used differently than you think.

and please don't disrespect Christ like that.

jdasch1, Eliica does 0-60 in 4s and tops out at 230 mph. It manages that without a transmission (I guess, it would be 1-speed direct drive).

Wow... this is just a problem found BEFORE it's released! Just wait until they get in the hands of the general public...

And I've never heard of launching a car, and telling the customer he will have to come back WHEN his tranny breaks! Can you imagine if one of the big 2.8 had done that?

RIcardo, please do see me in the rear view when it will available. Meanwhile back to combustion engines. I repeat again, since technology coming from silicon valley it will be long wait, short trip and before they sue the pants off Microsoft they will not move forward or backward for that matter. I'll believe it when I see it on the road or at least read reviews from journalists not self promotion video/article/press release. You cant drive press release or use it to pluck a rearview mirror on it. Best wishes.

Car goes 150MPH plus!! It needs 2 speeds to achieve the breakneck speed 4 second to 60MPH and go 150MPH. I am extremely happy that the problem is with the tranny, not the batteries! The tranny problem will be fixed and the cars will sell well. I saw one at the EVS show 2 weeks ago in CA, and it was the show star. Just want to drive it now!

Gentlemen and autonut, read it again. They have a functional motor that produces so much torque the tranny can't handle it. This is a GOOOD thing. Seems to me its a bit easier to get a tranny to handle the power than it is to get a functional drivetrain to begin with. They are almost there, and with some improved battery tech this thing will pull 300 miles on a charge. Not bad.

And Autonut, when they build it, I'll be seeing you in your Hondanburg blimpy-assed pile of shitty ugliness in mmy rear view mirror. :P

It's really stupid, how they can't get electric cars on the market. They have the technology to make it viable, the auto manufacturers simply claim they need to do "more testing" on an already acclaimed and tested drivetrain. Hybrids can go to hell, the way I feel about it is they only produce hybrids because it's more costly than making an electric car, which would be not only cheap but easy to produce!

What I really find silly though is auto manufacturers claiming lithium ion batteries get to hot to be viable. Really, all of you need to consider, how much engineering goes into the airflow and cooling of the engine your car uses. And for the same or less cost, they still claim it's too expensive.

spingood tanoya- That's sort of what I was thinking, just a one or two speed (low and high) transmission.

CA36GTP- I'm curious what you even know about CVT's. CVT's can be extremely strong, auto manufacturers just haven't chosen to invest in them.

Sporty car with defective tranny and god knows what else. If it like software, and it is developed in Silicon Valley, expect over promises, under delivery and overcharging. I hope that Gore is customer #1 or #2. He does not need functional tranny for cruising his 20,000 sq. feet house and he cant drive it outside 'cause there is no room for special agents.

Poor Ricardo is waiting for his 4 door electric sedan. It will come out of Honda as Hydrogen mobile, but he hates Hondas. What a debacle :) !

Here is Tesla's ad copy:

Come see the future of automobiles, The Tesla Roadster. It's like a cool golf cart, that is until the transmission fails on the 12th hole! Oh, and by the way it costs a LOT of money too! You'll be glad you looked!

I wonder why it needs more than one speed at all? Since electric motors essentially generate max torque at 0 rpm, it isn't like they need multiple ratios to handle acceleration.

The GM EV-1 only had a single speed tranny and it ran fine. Sure, it was governed to 85 mph, but it would cruise indefinitely at that speed on one gear, and it had more acceleration than the chassis could handle (the one I drove would easily fishtail when floored at any speed).
