The all-electric 2012 Tesla Model S will get even better than its maximum 300-mile range on a single charge if the latest reports prove true. The company is said to be developing a 440-volt charger for the car it has dubbed a Supercharger that promises to refill the battery in just one hour.

The car's 85kWh battery is now said to take nearly eight hours to recharge from the 240-volt system. There is caveat, however. The Superchargers aren't meant for home use. Rather, they would be installed along commonly traveled routes and act as refuel stations of sorts while drivers get a bite to eat, for example, according to MotorAuthority.

The Superchargers are already compatible with the 85kWh-equipped Model S cars, while cars with the 60kWh battery will be made so soon.

The costs involved in these Superchargers, including what drivers would need to pay to use them, aren't yet revealed, however.
