When most think of “green” states and automobiles, California typically sits on the top of that list. But Colorado apparently has plans to not only pass California in some regards, but to leap frog The Golden State completely.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, The Colorado Department of Revenue is offering up to an 85% tax credit for the purchase of a lower-than-normal emission vehicle. To be more precise, Colorado is offering a 50% tax credit off of the purchase price of a new Low Emission Vehicle, 75% back on an Ultra Low or Inherently Low Emission Vehicle, and a staggering 85% back on a Zero Emission Vehicle. To qualify the purchase must be made between January 1, 2007 and January 1, 2010 – that’s it.
So which cars win big with this legislation? The clear winner is the Tesla Roadster which awards its purchaser with a $42,083 tax rebate. Many hybrid models such as the Toyota Prius, Ford Fusion and Honda Insight also qualify for substantial rebates and there are even pure gasoline models that also qualify for various levels of these substantial subsidized rebates.

Two things:
1) Can colorado actually afford this after paying all that money to save Balloon Boy?
and
2) Can one actually carry forward the rebate on their Colorado state taxes? What I mean there is that, say CO has a state income tax rate of 4%. A person would have to have a taxable income in excess of $1M to qualify for the full rebate in the year purchased. Most buyers wont have that, so I am wondering if they can carry the amount owed to deduct off the next year’s state income tax for, say, 3 or 4 years.

#2 would be a sneaky loophole the government could use to deny large rebates, or at least limit their magnitude…prorating would be more fair…

LWA, the government would certainly never ever ever deceive or do anything sneaky and will always always do the fair thing. This is why I trust the government to do only what is right for me and I will goosestep to the death to support the government’s authority to compel me to obey its every command without question.
Oh wait – for a second there I slipped into an obamatarded delusion.

DenverGuy- A Tesla store opens in Boulder on Friday.
LL makes it sound confusing, its 85% off the DIFFERENCE between a zero emissions vehicle and the cost of a comparable, regularly emitting vehicle. Which, for the Tesla, works out to be 38.6% off the list price.

denver, if you’re a teacher, and you commute 40+ miles a day for work, than the boulder valley school district pays you 5 cents a mile to commute to and from work. Now on top of that is this 85% break, meaning that a 25k nissan leaf will actually be payed for in 5 years, and will also net you 27,000 dollars by that time. That’s right, the car is payed for and you also have saved 27,000 dollars. that is a great deal.

Armstealer, I saw that link.
And Reedfast, that’s some interesting incentive to move and change careers.
I’d go for the Model S over the Roadster, personally, but a Roadster would still be nice.

beatusmongous- is that the same spelling of your username? I always call you “beast among us”. but, THANK YOU. I appreciate the recognition pal.
I wonder if the State meant to do this, or never factored the Tesla in when they thought about hybrids and plug-ins. 50/50 we see a change in plans Monday.

This is petty good for a state in debt 385 million dollars.

hehe…shame on you, smeg, admitting you live in a retarded delusion…thing is, your delusion never ceases to be retarded and just vacillates between anarchist and conservative…
btw, here’s some homework for you…the obama health care plan is less extensive a reform than the reform proposed by richard m. nixon in ‘74… how about you read a bit about the proposed reforms of your conservative overlords: http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories/2009/September/03/nixon-proposal.aspx
fun fact: even republicans decades ago knew the system is screwed up and needs adjustment….
