Tesla to build Model 3 AWD, performance trim in Julyby Justin King
Air suspension will have to wait until next year.
Tesla is finally ready to begin taking orders for the dual-motor Model 3 and a performance package.
The upgrade options will be added by the end of next week, but production won't start until July. Customers waiting for air suspension will have to be patient until next year.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a notorious optimist regarding product timing, appears to be taking a more careful approach in disclosing estimates for upcoming products. Narrowing the window to a specific month for the all-wheel drive and performance variants suggests the company is confident the additional complexity can be absorbed without inhibiting the still-behind-schedule volume ramp.
Alongside the upgrade options, the company also aims to begin building the standard-range Model 3 with a smaller battery than the long-range module that kicked off initial production.
The company had initially hoped to reach a production volume of 500,000 vehicles annually by the end of this year.
I love it too, but trying to keep config simple so as not to blow up the production ramp— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 11, 2018
