Tesla builds first dual-motor Model 3

The company has also built a new assembly line.

Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk recently suggested the company has taken another step towards reaching its production goals for the Model 3. Posting on Twitter, the executive revealed his firm has built an entire new general assembly line in only three weeks.

The assembly line is located under what looks like a massive tent built close to Tesla's Fremont, California, factory. It's unclear if the company wants to continue building cars under a tent in the foreseeable future or if the new assembly line will replace the existing unit that currently builds the rear-wheel drive Model 3.

Musk's Tweet also includes good news for Model 3 reservation holders who are waiting for the high-performance version. The first dual motor Performance-spec car rolled off the assembly line under the tent on June 16, 2018.

Mass-producing a car is hard, and Tesla has famously struggled to build the Model 3 for nearly a year. Musk's comments suggest there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Time will tell whether Tesla will be able to reach the 5,000-car-per-week mark by the end of June, the time frame Musk gave shareholders a few weeks ago.
