Tesla to begin rolling out new navigation system

Elon Musk cautions the system is a \"mature beta\" but will improve rapidly.

Tesla is finally ready to begin rolling out its new navigation system, claimed to be "light years ahead" of the oft-derided current platform.

The company has faced many complaints over its aging navigation platform. Some Model S and X owners have cried foul over outdated maps and other issues.

New nav starts rolling out this weekend. Should be considered a mature beta at first, so won't be perfect, but will improve rapidly. With the old system, we were stuck with legacy 3rd party black box code and stale data. No way to improve.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk cautions that the new implementation should be considered a "mature beta" at first, but it will quickly improve. It has been reprogrammed from the ground up, allowing the automaker to implement quicker updates without waiting for other companies.

"With the old system, we were stuck with legacy 3rd party black box code and stale data," Musk explained. "No way to improve."
