Those worried about efficiencies and pollution from the powerplant charging EVs:

Electric motors are far more efficient that gas motors; fuel burns far more efficiently in a powerplant than in your car; only half of our electric power is made from dirty sources; and delivering electricity over wires is far more efficient than delivering fuel in a truck.

All these improvements in efficiency mean that far less pollution per mile is created by an EV.

Those here lamenting the high price of Teslas should look at this link:

http://www.milesautomotive.com/products_xs200.html

It's an imported Chinese electric car - with a 200 mile range, and an 80mph top speed. MSRP is $28500.

I like what Tesla has in mind here. They are offering a round-the-city sports car. Not only does it get 135MPG and able to 60 in 4seconds, but it also starts something new in the automobile industry. I think if auto manufactures could design for the next 20years, before hydrogen really hits, a E85 Ethanol Hybrid vehicle worthy of performance our economy would be in a much safer and better state then it is today. So I thumbs up the Tesla team for designing this vehicle. Looks better than a Prius or Insight and is faster then a Ferrari. Stay Safe.

These vehicles are great for the sake of options. C'mon, look at the numbers. How can you not be amazed!!! Any gear-head or car nut would love those numbers. I think Toy Yoda is right. It's in its infancy stage. Remember the "Saved By the Bell" cell phones??? Remember the size of the battery and how long they lasted???? Look at the cell phones now!

anyone about to dissent should go read teslamotors.com 's white pages .pdf and FAQ page. Electric will make sense as battery tech improves. The current tesla roadster is a real wondercar, considering its battery pack and controller make up ~1000 lbs out of a 2500 lb car!

Like a previous post said, internal combustion engines seems to rule most of the performance categories. Electric motors have the edge in instantaneous torque. But to me, it doesn't matter.

Electric cars have been around for a long time, but haven't gotten the attention, money and other resources to improve the technology. In effect, it's still a technology in it's infancy. I think it's great that people have an interest in these cars and the increased attention to the technology will result in improvements.

This is good news, to me. :)

NOT surprisingly, all 100 have sold out, due to be delivered sometime in early 2007.

Renton - you've just confirmed that's your real name. Did you get made fun of a lot as a kid?

BTW....I know you know, but BMW invested on hybrids. I don't think electric is THE answer, but your arrogance with gas is the problem. My argument is about the need for alternative fuel/modes of transportation......something that limits our dependency on fossil fuels and its negative effects on the environment.

There are many options that offer better power-to-weight than gas, but is it necessarily the better answer?...No. What are you going to do when gas is $10, $20/gallon or higher? Geeeeee, it still has a good power-to-weight ratio, so I guess it's okay.

Again, Renton (man, that's gotta suck), my argument is about alternative fuel. However, 0-60 in 4 seconds with 135 mpg is pretty damn cool. Find me a gas car that can do that.

That's alot for an electric car, 100,000$$. But a 250 mile range, and 0-60 in 4 secs and equivelent 135 mpg is awesome. Bring it at a lower price (30,000, 40,000$)and I'll consider it!

No shit about the hydrogen. I'm an engineering student and I took a fuel cells class. Great stuff but guess what you need to extract hydrogen? Other fuels...d'oh!

I have to admit though, I wouldn't mind owning one of these for small race tracks and whanot

Jeff -- of course that is not my real name. With braniacs like you out there why would I use it?

Lets see, BMW won't make an electric car b/c they suck. Nothing beats gasoline/deisel on its power to weight ratio. 100 bs of gas will get you futher and faster than 100lbs of charged battery.

What charges the battery, electricity? Coming from the powerplant, made by deisel generators (sometimes nulear, rarely hydroelectric) With all the losses in the inefficient system, more fuel is burned than just putting it in your tank.

Still feel so smart ?

Renton (I hope that's not your real name), from prior posts, if BMW developed an electric vehicle, you'd probably screw it. Alternative modes of transportation are really needed, so please chug a tall glass of gasoline for me if you love it so much......and then have a nice tall glass of SHUT THE F*CK UP.
