A study by Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) released today says that text messaging is the single biggest - often deadly -distraction for young drivers. The teens surveyed ranked text messaging above even their own emotional state as the biggest reason for poor driving.
The survey studied 900 students from 26 schools, 37 percent of whom ranked text messaging as “extremely” or “very” distracting. Interestingly, only 14 percent of the teens surveyed said that talking on that very same cell phone is a major distraction.

Here’s a thought: late model BMW’s need you to insert the key fob into a receptacle before hitting the start button. Make the receptacle be for a cell phone instead, once it is inserted it is automatically turned off, and the vehicle won’t start until it is. The voice mail message could be: “I’m sorry but Suzie (or Bif) is trying to avoid hitting the bus in front of them at the moment. Please leave your inane message at the tone and they will get back to you in math class”

Well.. as far as text messages go themselves, they are useful at times. My wife and I have 200 a month, while we never use that many they can be handy when we just need to get a simple message through, especially in places where we can’t talk - like in a meeting, etc. As far as teens texting while driving - this is completely on the parents. It’s simple to find out when and where they are texting… if they see messages sent during a time they know their kid is driving then it’s up to them to do something about it - take the phone away or the car… tell them it’s one or the other. At the very least call the damn phone company and have messaging disabled on the kids phone. Then again, sometimes it’s the very same soccer-moms seen jabbering away on the phone while behind the wheel… so much for responsibility.

My kids always let there phones ring and let there voice mail take the call if there driving. My daughter has that onstar for her Aveo so she can talk with out having her hands on a phone its good for her safety and she talks the most on phones so i wanted to get that for her. I care about my kids and I know they will never use a cell phone well driving.

So basically these ****in’ teen wankstains admitted that their biggest driving distraction is that they are too ****in’ stupid to not do a text message while driving. That is the long and short of it. Messaging itself is not the distraction, but rather the stupid teenie-****ers themselves. Call is as it is, LLN. The teens are at fault, not the phones or the parents.
And teens, if you are gonna die behind the wheel, don’t die getting out a text message; die getting a blow job, you retarded worthless McD-munching asswipes.

The words some of you choose should be reserved for another topic in another place, this is an automobile thread, not a Metallica discussion. I understand this is a serious issue, but making statements such as this: “Stupid scumbags like that should be taken out back and shot!” and “retarded worthless McD-munching asswipes.” Keep in mind this group of ppl are your own sons and daughters. The truth is anyone with a cell phone has done this at least once. I dont have any kids but if i did id make damn sure they knew the proper protocol of phones and driving. Parents are responsible for their kids actions. They always have and they always will. If you cant control your children you both need help. Also the law needs to start pulling ppl over and giving tickets for witnessing such activities such as texting while driving.

Now, as to your idea of (I quote here):
….. “the law need to start pulling ppl over and giving tickets for
…… witnessing such activities such as texting while driving”
why the hell should I be pulled over and ticketed because I witnessed the little asswipe next to me texting while driving??? What the **** did I do??? Ticket his dumb ass, not mine, and then after he pays take him out back and shoot him. WhyTF should I be ticketed and punished for seeing someone being a ****head? Are you nuts????

Personally I love laying on the horn at people while they’re on the cell talking and driving like asses. It’s just to let the person on the other end of the conversation know they are talking to a ticking time bomb. Could you imagine being on the other end of that conversation, chatting along and then the sudden shreik of ravaged metal and glass, and then ‘beep’… silence. I’ll see a bunch of these punk kids texting and weaving in the middle of traffic. Of course the best example of texting comes from central NY where an off duty cop was plastered, driving, and texting, while he took out 2 women crossing the street. One died. He was discharged from the police, without a day served in prison.
Anyway, I wish I knew how those folks in the 80’s and 90’s and ever since the model T ever got through a drive somewhere without ‘texting’.

No question, we in the cell-phone and Blackberry age are less safe than we were even a few years back. Something that’s been missing from the discussion is the fact that studies have shown that the “conversation” element of being on the cell phone is the most distracting part of talking on a cell phone while driving. Bluetooth and hands-free head sets perhaps reduce distraction (I think so, others may disagree), but the best thing to do is just stay off the phone, don’t even think about texting, and just take 15 minutes and eat your cheeseburger in the restaurant, instead of out on the road.
It probably isn’t true anymore, but I’ve heard that not that long ago, German automakers (and perhaps other Europoean makes as well) didn’t even include cup holders in their cars. Why? Because behind-the-wheel driving time was for driving only. No distractions.

I’m actually going to agree with karkat, aside from the witnessing part (whether or not you meant the driver doing the texting or someone else watching the driver)… I’m sure there are a quite a few young drivers on this forum, and it’s your sons and daughters being talked about here.
I’m sure some of you are 12 year olds too, many of you have quite profane and immature language… let alone you can’t even spell half of it.
I also agree with Scarface03’s comment, take a few minutes to do whatever you necessarily need to do, and then go to work. Cars weren’t made to be leasurily, they were originally made to transport you to point A and B… I suppose now that there’s such a thing as a traffic jam, and the United States has thousands upon thousands of miles of roads and highways, you’re gonna end up spending lots of hours behind the wheel… I know many of my friends make 1 hour commutes to and from work, daily. But atleast my friends don’t put other peoples lives at risk, or use profane and illegible language…
I seldom use my cellphone, and 99% of the time I pull over into the nearest parking lot… I have no need for texting in the car. Generally I carry a drink in my car and a CD, and that’s it.
The “little ****s” should not be shot, they should have their phone service taken away before an accident happens, and charged a ridiculous amount of cash… or maybe auto manufactures should make some sort of device that doesn’t allow texting when the vehicle is in motion, same for Ipods.

lmho, they’re not boring at all RicardoHead. They just choose not to drive like maniacs on the road (and I’m sure you’d like more people to be like that, right? I hate my insurance rates enough already, and I don’t need them to go up because some idiot didn’t notice the stop sign and hits you around a blind turn, or some kid racer in their riced up BMW drives at 120 down the highway, and 5 minutes later you see an ambulance attending that same BMW… and yes, that all happened, the BMW being an accident on the highway I saw a few months ago, and the blind turn incident a relative… fortunately they didn’t get hurt, and the car was in for repair shortly). And excuse me, yes they do curse, but they atleast know how to spell it.
Too many teenagers are disrespectful, they’ve become demoralized (doing something politically or mentally “right” doesn’t count as morals… we all have that urge when we see a good looking lady walking down the street to hit on her, that doesn’t mean we should go with it *cough* married *cough*… well, just because you have a cell phone does it mean you should use it and endanger others lives?), but they should not be shot. Taxes seem high enough, and I’m sure there are plenty of these kids out there, so charge them a high ticket. I don’t use texting, it’s not on my plan, so I’m not worried!

In terms of talking about sons and daughters, what happened to stern parents??? I’m sure every driver who owns a cell phone (that means all of us) has made or received calls while driving. Not smart, but we’ve all done it at some point. Besides, with all the Bluetooth headsets and stereo interfaces nowadays, it’s possible to do it relatively safely. Sending text messages while driving however, is just plain dangerous and dumb… and yes, the little ****s should be taken out back and shot… in the leg or crotch so they can sit, bleed & think about what dick heads they’ve been.
