Thanks for waiting: Porsche hands out free luggage for Panamera delay

11/24/2009, 1:41 PM

By Drew Johnson

Most automotive enthusiasts have at least thumbed through the Porsche Design catalog, and maybe some have had the sudden urge to spend $3,580 on a set of shiny new Porsche-branded luggage. Early Porsche Panamera buyers will be able to ignore that urge, however, as the first 200 buyers in the U.S. will be receiving a free set of bags.

Porsche has already shipped its first batch of Panamera to the U.S., but customers are still waiting to take delivery of their four-door sports sedan. The delay stems from a problem with the Panamera’s key and software, which is being fixed at four points of entry around the country.

To smooth things over with Panamera customers, Porsche has included a set of $3,580 with the 195 cars affected by the defect.

Porsche says 72 of the cars have now been fixed and delivered to dealers, with the remaining 123 set to get the fix in the coming days. Panamera buyer #196 will be left out of the free luggage deal as all repairs are now taking place at the Porsche factory.

@NMOFGMs Daddy I believe that Rimowa manufactures this line of Porsche luggage, so the luggage would be Made in Germany.

@scratchy: i think it sucks to be anyone who bought a Panamera, not just #196… who in their right mind would buy that ugly thing

To make it worse…apparently the Panamera also comes available in “Sh*t Brown”. Is that a cost extra color Porsche? Or does looking like sh*t come standard?

I heard that when GM was forced to delay the first Camaro deliveries everyone with a deposit received a coupon for a free mullet perm at Supercuts.

@several of you

Guys, I gotta tell you. I’ve seen every picture of the new Panamera – be it online, in car magazines, etc. I was so disappointed with what this car looked like. Don’t get me wrong, the Panamera Turbo’s numbers are phenomenal. 0-60 in 3.7 in a car that weighs that much, not to mention that it’s also a comfortable and luxurious people hauler when you want it to be. But after looking at hundreds of photos of this thing, I didn’t know how people were going to put this car in the same category as the drop-dead gorgeous Aston Martin Rapide, and the upcoming Lamborghini ‘four-door coupe’. Yeah, obviously the performance will be similar, but it’s like comparing apples to oranges. This has been the case for Porsches for a while though – function over form, not the other way around.

…and then I saw one.

Dark Blue Panamera Turbo with PCCB, the 20″ BBS wheels – every single option possible was on this car. The guy said he paid somewhere in the “$160,000 range”.

I fell in love the second I laid eyes on it. Take it from me…there is not one single picture of the Panamera out there that does it justice. The car is much lower, wider, prettier, and louder than any picture or video can depict. This thing was so gorgeous – when you see one in person, you’ll know what I mean. This car’s looks have been scrutinized and bashed on by ‘enthusiasts’. But, like I said, wait until you see this car. A thousand times better than they look in the pictures and videos.

Agree with you too Guru. I had a black one behind me today on the highway that I ended up following afterwards. It seemed lower and wider than what I took away from in the photos. It had presence.

It turned into the Broncos’ HQ parking lot. Damn it. I want their paychecks

nice, johnny…and i’m going to vote against the panamera haters…i’ve said it before, but i’ll say it again…it looks a little froggy in the rear in photos, but otherwise it’s a stellar piece of engineering…

You guys are exactly right. DenverGuy, you said it perfectly when you said it has “presence”. That’s a great way to describe it. But if the haters want to hate, let them. Porsche is setting new standards and new rules when it comes to the dynamic abilities of a luxury sports sedan. And they can b*tch and moan about how the back of the car is the ugliest thing they’ve ever seen, that it’s not a true Porsche, etc. That’s undoubtedly BEFORE they ever see the car in person. Hahahaha haters!!! Porsche builds its first sedan in the company’s 61-year history and doesn’t just hit a home run – they hit the ball out of the damn stadium…

Car looks good “in person” until you get to the rear. Definitely Jenifer Lopez from behind; if you like a solid rump this is it (btw I do, bit not THAT solid).

I was one of the “waiters” — my car finally arrived at the dealer on Dec 4. Some people are still waiting. To vent my frustration, I made this video:
