The anatomy of (un)cool: how to pick cars with credibility

03/20/2006, 9:24 AM

Andy Wilman, the producer of Top Gear, explains the ground rules for what makes are car cool, and what makes one uncool. Wilam says to avoid cars that celebrities buy, because one wrong owner “will crush the coolness of a Rolls-Royce Phantom.” Second, “even the proper charismatic celebs can’t make an uncool car look cool — Cameron Diaz is a sad sight in a Prius — so what chance have you got?” So-called “fashion cars” should also be avoided, he says. “Fashion cars are the ones that make a massive impact for five minutes and then look clichéd and vaguely ridiculous. I give you the Audi TT.” Other “fashion cars,” according to Wilam, include the VW Beetle, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Jaguar S-type, which are all “deeply uncool anyway.” And a car’s coolness “has nothing to do with how quickly it goes round a corner.” For example, the “Chrysler 300C has the driving dynamics of a donkey, but no car matches it for sheer Sopranos presence.”

Who gives a damn. Andy can go fly a kite. If you like it, enjoy it. Live your own life. Don’t let some so-called “expert” tell you what to do.

has he driven a 300c? that’s one athletic donkey. Saying a 545i or CTSV is better is no insult.

I agree with TW. Besides, I think that the TT is still cool.

So do I. I hate it when “celebrities” try to pass off their opinions as facts.

The TT has practically made it to design icon status. And the m3 as ‘Seriously Uncool’??

I enjoy Top Gear for their vehicle testing but there opinions are complete rubbish, and just generate buzz about their show.

I’m gonna have to disagree with Andy Wilman there. I see no fewer than 400 3-series a day on the road and I still want one.

Don’t worry 3-series, you’re still cool in my book.

Too subjective. To try to be cool is something like you will never be.It is a label others apply to somebody/something.

If I was to say something is cool, then Krispy Kreme Donuts is insanely cool with their PT Cruiser.A high end funeral home I know of is the height of cool with their pocket hearse(appearance only) PT Cruiser. As,well, the Beetle Cabrio transcends time and usually sits with boutique style women/girls.Not that a guy couldn’t own one.
