Less than a half century ago, every carmaker offered at least one two-door automobile, explains auto columnist Bob Elton. Coupes and convertibles were a “bold and fun statement of personal prosperity” — a must-have status symbol and recreational toy. But safety concerns, economic turmoil, and “practicality” lead to the near demise of the two-door automobile in more recent decades. New technology and an increased interest in standout automobiles in the last few years, however, is changing all that, and coupes and convertibles are making a big comeback, Elton says. He also points out that the move away from SUVs and trucks will lead to the “return of the great American coupe.” The luxury marques are leading the trend — from the new BMW 6-Series to the Bentley GT. But other carmakers are also following suit, with cars like the new Honda Civic, Ford Mustang , Dodge Challenger, and Chevy Camaro.
