In an article on the development of the original Macintosh computer, team member Andy Hertzfeld recalls a conversation in 1981 between Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs and James Ferris, another contributor to the project. “We need it to have a classic look, that won’t go out of style, like the Volkswagen Beetle ,” Jobs reportedly said. “No, that’s not right,” Ferris replied. “The lines should be voluptuous, like a Ferrari .” Jobs then responded: “Not a Ferrari, that’s not right either … It should be more like a Porsche !” In those days Jobs was reportedly driving a Porsche 928. The Leftlane Perspective: Jobs was right about the Beetle and Porsche being timeless designs. Twenty five years later, his words couldn’t be more true. And today, Jobs still likes to talk about cars. He recently commented that on how production cars rarely turn out as well as the concepts that inspired them.
