The Macintosh: like a Porsche

03/08/2006, 3:53 PM

In an article on the development of the original Macintosh computer, team member Andy Hertzfeld recalls a conversation in 1981 between Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs and James Ferris, another contributor to the project. “We need it to have a classic look, that won’t go out of style, like the Volkswagen Beetle,” Jobs reportedly said. “No, that’s not right,” Ferris replied. “The lines should be voluptuous, like a Ferrari.” Jobs then responded: “Not a Ferrari, that’s not right either … It should be more like a Porsche!” In those days Jobs was reportedly driving a Porsche 928. The Leftlane Perspective: Jobs was right about the Beetle and Porsche being timeless designs. Twenty five years later, his words couldn’t be more true. And today, Jobs still likes to talk about cars. He recently commented that on how production cars rarely turn out as well as the concepts that inspired them.

im not sure if the original mac is exactly what id call ‘timeless’… it did, does, and always will look like a box with a screen…

The 928 isn’t exactly timeless, either. I recall one review saying it looked like an “AMC Pacer in drag.” Great performance and handling, but as far as design…

The Porsche does have a timeless design.
Now, the first thing that came to my mind reading this is the fact that Bill Gates drives a Porsche apparently.
Maybe he uses a Mac as his personal computer too?

I think I’m missing the link here. How is the Mac timeless? I’m sorry, but I think the title of this arcticle should have been “The Macintosh: Like a Porsche — Only not as nice”.

“Mac kills my inner child.”

Macs are bloody fascinating to use.I started on them at my university and didn’t even know what a pc was.A Mac is curiously captivating once you are using it.Like an Alice In Wonderland rabbit hole. How does it kill your inner child?!Just the opposite for me.
