This day in history: retractable headlamps, parking meters

07/19/2006, 2:17 PM

By admin

Harold T. Ames filed a patent application for his retractable headlamps on this day in 1934. The headlamps were a defining feature of the Cord 810. Today, retractable headlamps don’t appear on any production automobile. But while the retractable headlight may be thing of the past, another invention that debuted exactly a year later is most certainly here to stay. On July 19th, 1935, the first automatic parking meter in the U.S., the Park-O-Meter invented by Carlton Magee, was installed in Oklahoma City by the Dual Parking Meter Company.

Yeah, a rich history.
Like when America used to own slaves !
And when America damn near killed off an entire race of people and took their land !
All to get RICH.

So yeah, I guess America does have a RICH history.

That Cord 810 looked awesome. I loved retractable headlamps when I was a kid. Well, I still like them. The Ferrari 456 GT is the last car I remember that had them, and it looked great.

The C5 Vettes had them. I want to say that some current car uses them, but I can’t seem to come up with any.
