Former GM subsidiary Delphi has already begun hiring temporary workers to replace some of the 12,600 union-represented employees it plans to shed by January, 2007. In all, GM and Delphi will see 47,000 union workers leave in the next five months. The companies anticipate being able to hire quickly from a large pool of people seeking jobs, especially in areas with high unemployment, such as Michigan. The difference is that wages will be just 50 percent of what union workers get — with no benefits.
