The cross, the capital, the pale families, the fear and the mouthpieces
The single sista lynch
The cell doors crash
And the master's drums echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo

The nearly universal employment in the U.S. is "employment at will", that is, employer and employee can end the employment for any reason or no reason at all (discrimination laws trim that up a bit).

I image the UAW contracts have something to say about that, but the bottom line is that, in any other business, if a multi-billion dollar company had to eliminate a third shift to maintain its viability, it would do it and have no problem with it.

I can see anybody getting fired would be filled with resentment and anger, but violence is rarely a concern. I have little doubt that the threats of violence--legit or not--have their source in union workers. I'm not saying that union members are lawless or thugs, but the analogy to the "mob mentality" is accurate--unions probably think they are entitled to something merely because they are a member of a group, especially a group that historically had a lot of power, but is becoming ever more a burden on their companies.

I feel for uawsanctionedscab's bait-and-switch, but the reality is that the only time employers can't dictate the terms of hiring someone is if the terms are so harsh that no one will work for them. How many Belvidere 1st and 2nd shift workers are just happy they HAVE a job?....

Not to condone what goes on but there are good reasons those workers are angry with Chrysler. They were "enhanced workers" which means you are basically a temporary worker authorized by the Uaw to do the same work as the rest with no chance of progressing like the rest of the regular workers. Some would say so what. Well, most were hired under a 120 day permanent position and told this would lead to regular employment just like the traditional way of hiring in to UAW. Then, Chrysler, owned by Dailmer at that time, changed to this format pretty much leaving those that left their old jobs stuck to sign that temporary agreement. The old bait and switch if you will. You see they were worried about pumping out cars, they needed to act fast, their state of the art facility wasnt so state of the art, many problems for over a year. So you trick people in to thinking they will have a career, when in fact, you are a patch for their inability to manufacture vehicles properly like the rest of the industry. Didnt matter anyway since the sales are not as robust as they planned. But those workers got cut this past week for that reason. Terminated i should say. How did they establish a two tiered system at Belvidere without going through proper union negotiations? Who knows? They basically dont follow any rules at the Belvidere plant, its pretty much ad lib. And who is gonna stop them, nobody wants them to fail and close up shop right? Well except for those that were screwed over the last almost two years. Whats wrong with being upfront and telling a worker what the plan is rather than continually spreading fiction so that they will continue to have hope and have a future. And they wonder why they cant sell cars. What goes around comes around boys. Chryslers day is coming soon! There was much more deception in many areas, but why bother. No judge is gonna listen, they dont want an "american icon" to collapse. Even though it should.

Andre, I'll address the actual problem of their mental instability right here ----> there isn't a mental problem in the world that a bullet thru the head couldn't cure.

That being said, Belvidere is not on my list of vacation destinations, it's true.

Ricardo Head its obvious that you've never been to Belvidere because you would know that it is far from crime-ridden. People are probably just pissed off that they lost their jobs, as I'm sure you would be in the same situation. As far as shutting down the plant, should we shut down every institution that receives a threat? Thats stupid. The sad fact is that this world is filled with crazy people and until we address the actual problem of these people's mental instabilty these kinds of things will continue.

@Stig, "I wonder who started the rumor … perhaps the UAW themselves?"
.
Good point as it could also be the other way around with Cerberus creating more faux propaganda now and for the future.

I can understand union members feelings, although I am not condemning violence. I read that most of the money Cerberus put for Chrysler came from UNION PENSION FUNDS, especially California state and California teacher's Unions. Since I read it on Internet I can guarantee accuracy of this, but I do know that majority of hedge funds exists on union pension money.

Why is this the fault of Cerberus? They had nothing to do with bringing these models into production. While I feel for those about to be out of work, their anger is misdirected. Cerberus got left with this load. Now they the unenviable task of trying to make honey out a pile of Daimler's feces.
