It was bound to happen sooner or later, in light of the recently launched Genesis Coupe and now comes word that Hyundai’s sporty Tiburon won’t be produced for the 2009 model year. But the rear-wheel drive Genesis is not a replacement for the long-serving coupe which has been around since 1997 if you ask John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America’s product development vice president.
“We are seriously looking at a small front-wheel-drive coupe to replace the Tiburon, but I can’t say when that will happen,” Krafcik told Automotive News on Thursday. The front-wheel drive Tiburon, offered with either an inline four-cylinder or V6 powerplant, will be sold until the spring of 2009, when the Genesis coupe goes on sale.
Krafcik went on to suggest the Tiburon’s replacement would be similar to the Veloster concept shown at Seoul auto show last April. The concept featured a similar powertrain to the Tiburon, with a five-speed manual mated to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Is that rear drive coupe going to be call the Genesis coupe ? They need to step up the interior if they want it to have the Genesis name on it Even the Veracruz interior has an upscale feel and look so this coupe should have one as well
Why bother replacing the Tib when the G coupe comes with a 4 and 6 powerplant

kill the name- don’t put the name on some compact car that looks nothing like the tiburon used to- could upset all the tibby faithful out there- all 4 of them

Anybody remember the Scoupe? Now that was truly a piece of ****. The first gen Tiburon was better, but still slow, noisy and ugly. The second gen isn’t bad with the V6 if you’re only planning on racing V6 rental cars, but still not a stunner by any stretch. The Genesis will be better still- it had better be for the price boost- and in many ways mirrors Hyundai’s climb up the car ranks. Are they there yet? Not quite, but they’ve sure come a long way since the Scoupe.

The Tibby has been a nice looking car for a while now… and the price is great.
If they had put a turbo four under the hood instead of that wimpy V6 it would have sold a lot better.

I agree with Krafcik. It’s not a great idea for Hyundai to essentially abandon the low-cost, sport coupe market, which has obviously been reasonably good to them, to dive head first into a slightly more upscale coupe market where there’s potentially a lot of extra competition. The only way this is even remotely a good idea is if they plan to market the entry level Genesis Coupe at about the same price as the entry level Tiburon and then just go up from there.
Additionally, they should probably take a cue from Ford’s Five-Hundred debacle and hang on to the Tiburon name. They’ve spent over a decade building it up, so why kill it now?

On a side note, can someone explain to me why Hyundai is naming EVERYTHING after Spanish/Mexican words or places? The Tiburon is Spanish for “shark”, Santa Fe is a city in New Mexico among other things, Veracruz is a state in Mexico, etc.

Tiburon was nice only problem was that the v6 didnt put that much power I mean basically it was a joke. No wonder it didnt sell well. This car needed looks and power and it lacked both.

Commodore… b/c they know that they can get a ton of money from the Mexicans who will buy their cars if they have spanish names.

It was good while it lasted. It just didn’t live completely up to expectations. But Tuneres have done some cool things with that V6. But enough. Genesis Coupe please.
Commodore,
I guess it’s the same reason why FORD tries to stick with “E” words that have to do with travel when naming their SUVs like “Escape”, “Explorer”, “Expedition”, and “Excursion”. But I think they are running out of “E” words hence the “Flex”.
It’s a theme that is easy for the company to track and tack (Get the rights to). Hyundai, and I hate to keep using this excuse, is a young car company and do not have a large portfolio of assets to lean on. GM, FORD, CHRYSLER have huge lists of names they can lean on (assuming they have not somehow ruined them). Have you noticed that DETROITs new names tend to be very bland, generic, or just stupid.

Hundai/Kia should stick to something they know, like making portable out-houses, and get out of the car business.

hyundai is a young company so I can forgive them for making a POS or two over the years They really never had any major recalls and they have invested much money in the quality of their vehicles even though they still seen to look like Honda’s
They had a 100k warranty before any of the big 3 remember
The Tib had a v6 with 181 hp? H Koreans need to make better engines even if they have to borrow some japanese engine ideas and designs like they burrow the int and ext designs

ford uses “e” words suvs and crossovers; “explorer,” “expedition,” edge,” “escape,” and “f” words for cars; “fusion,” five hundred,” “focus,” “freestyle,” and now “flex,” which is basically a station wagon. of course, the strategy was shot to hell when they renamed the five hundred the taurus again. not that it was a good strategy to begin with.
as for the tiburon, i always thought it was good-looking. never drove one, so i can’t attest to the interior or how it felt when driven.

Hyundai is a huge conglomerate in So. Korea about the size of Mitsubishi of Japan (or may be bigger). They build everything from locomotives to earth movers and cargo ships. Hyundai have build cars as long as Honda did, they did not export them. With Korean nationalism it was working well for a while. I think Genesis is ill timed. RWD with V6 and slush box will not be fuel efficient and efficiency will be the name of the game for a long time.

^^, maybe but it’s supposed to be a luxury model thus inefficiency can be forgiven. But I’ll reserve my final judgment until I get a chance to test drive one.

i’ve always liked the current tiburon design and it is sad that it won’t be coming back for 2009. i hope it’s replacement gives it more refinement and better engine choices and, hopefully, hyundai will have their own version of an in house tuner like the japanese big 3.

There is an available solution to the sluggishness of the tibby, and it’s available from the dealers that sell them… Very few know anything about it, but there are about 115 extra ponies that you can put under the hood for about $4500. Hyundai does produce a 7lb supercharger for the 2.7L V-6 which will take you from the nasty 172hp all the way up to 276hp, plus the factory intake and exhaust options will bring you to about 290hp… all that for less than $34k cdn… not too bad… what is too bad is that none of my colleagues on the Hyundai sales floors never explain this stuff to customers… especially since they’re all factory and don’t mess with the warranty… too bad nobody knew this stuff earlier.
