Debate continues over a plan to create the Bay Area’s first toll lane along a busy 14-mile stretch of Interstate 680. Toll lanes are part of an ongoing debate in U.S. and Canada, but this $22 million project has thrust the issue further into the media spotlight. The plan seeks to relieve congestion by allowing solo drivers to pay a fee to use the car-pool lane along southbound I-680. The debate comes focuses on the philosophical dilemma of whether the wealthy should be able to “buy their way out of traffic.” Opponents of toll lanes — who prefer to call them “ Lexus lanes” — say they only further class segregation.
