Top Canadian cop recommends ticket for sliding into ditch

03/11/2008, 11:39 AM

By jonaziz

Julian Fantino, the seemingly authoritarian commissioner of Ontario’s provincial police force has proposed new legislation that would lead to officers handing out tickets to anyone who puts their car into a ditch during a snowstorm. Ontario — Canada’s most populous province — recently introduced legislation to impound for a week the vehicle of anyone caught driving 31 mph over the speed limit.

Fantino also recently said he supports lowering the impoundment threshold from 31 mph (50 km/h) to 18 mph (30 km/h). That would mean anyone caught traveling 18 mph over the speed limit would have their car seized on the spot for a week and face a fine of $2,000 to $10,000 for stunt driving. So far, Canadian lawmakers seem satisfied with the 31 mph directive.

The ditch ticket proposal might irk average drivers even more. Fantino said he thinks anyone whose car slides off the highway in bad weather should be fined, even if there is no evidence of careless driving or excessive speed.

With a crap US dollar, passport restrictions coming up , and Saftey Nazis I think I’ll just cross Canada off of my travel list.

Sometimes the human race makes me wonder. This proposed law is so stupid that I’m forced to wonder just how did this man make it to such a high ranking official? After watching Bush go the distance in the US, the surveillance cameras in England, and the “street racing” laws of Canada I’m forced to rethink my belief that people at least try to act intelligent.

Someone from Ontario please chime in, but I talk to lots of people there and if you’re not doing 50 over you’re a moving chicane. This Fantino is a clueless f*ck. Anyone knows those who cause the most problems are the hypocritical a**holes who feel it’s their job to do the posted limit in the left lane.

I live in British Columbia and the police force out here is so disproportionate compared to Ontario- I’d guess we have half the officers per capita- that being able to stretch your car’s legs once in a while and not get caught is still possible. In Ontario- the centre of Canada’s know universe- I guess it’s about to get a lot harder.

Shamed to say I’m from Canada. Might think twice about staying here with these communists.

Johnnycanuck: It is still possible to stretch your cars legs in Ontario if you want to risk it, but personally i’d keep it to nicely paved country roads with no traffic or trees/crops beside you so there are no place for police to hide. I’d be more comfortable driving fast for a short period of time along one of those than a 400 series highway.

If the law were to ever change and they start impounded cars for going 130km/h on a 400 series highway, the impound lots around Toronto are going to need to invest in A LOT more real estate. Until September I had been commuting along Highway 407 for about 3 years, and the average driver in the far left lane is almost always going at least 140km/h. Even though this hack of a commissioner would probably hate to see or hear it, traffic moves perfectly fine and is generally well behaved along this stretch at those speeds.

This has all stemmed from a couple bad accidents involving stupid kids swerving in and out of traffic heading up to cottage country on Highway 400 last summer. I’m all for throwing the book at these kind of drivers, nothing pisses me off more while driving than people cutting off other drivers, swerving from lane to lane. I just don’t think that those idiots’ mistakes should mean that I now have to worry about a $2000+ fine and car impoundment because I decided to go 140km/h on an 8+ lane divided highway with almost no traffic.

I’ve wondered though… has the new 50km/h over = impoundment law made a noticeable difference in speeding on the 400 series highways? I moved to Germany a couple weeks before that was enacted (perfect timing) so I haven’t had a chance to witness the effects.

Fantino is the head of the Ontario Provincial Police. Laws have to be enacted by either the Provincial or the Federal Government, depending on jurisdiction. Fantino is also a blow-hard, who seems to like having his name in the news.

That being said, here in Toronto there are a lot of drivers who have never seen snow, let alone driven in it, and a relatively small amount seems to bring the city’s traffic to a complete standstill. Couple that with people in 4 wheeld drive SUV’s that have a great understanding that 4 wheel drive means you can go, but stopping and steering is a completely different story. Should they be fined for ending up in the ditch? No, unfortunately you can’t legislate intelligence, and the insurance rate hikes they will see would probably be a greater deterrence, or perhaps ancourage some of them to take some driving lessons.

On a completely different note, last year I watched a woman drive her BMW into the side of a bus. Twice. Same bus. Same intersection.

This Fantino guy is a cancer for the province of Ontario. The government really needs to take a hard look at this guy and start asking if this guy even has a stable mind. But before you guys go call Ontario a communist province, you should know this crazy law about getting fined if you slide into a ditch during bad weather already exists in some states. There are a few states (Georgia for example) that make Ontario look like freedom land. I have a feeling this Fantino chap is looking at some of the nazi style control of some states and thinks it might be a good idea for Ontario. Fantino is old, his mind is getting a bit senile, and he aint no poster child for law and order, this guy has been involved in a few corruption scandals (he’s Italian no surprise) I say the people of Ontario need to get together and start a pettition to get rid of this freak.

Wow the Province of Ontario is taking things way too far. First they want to crush your car if you get caught street racing, or if it looks like it’s modded. Now they assume the reason why you crash into a ditch during a snowstorm is because you’re driving to fast??? Doesn’t this cross any legal laws??? What if you were cut off or something? What about innocent until proven guilty?? Oh wait that’s for The United States… “The land of the free”

Its not so bad in the north…. True, we did get 80″ of snow in Toronto this year (so far) and the commissioner is a little extreme. However, highways are a major deal here. The 401 is one of, if not the widest (22 lanes) and most travelled (over 500,000 vehicles per day) highway in North America. Fantino’s just throwing that stuff against the wall to see what will stick.
Call me crazy but I think reduced speed encourages distraction. The slower you go, the easier it is to do other things, like talking on the cell phone (which should hands-free or banned altogether), eating, shaving, etc.
And besides, Canada can be pretty pro-active in a good way. Look at daytime running lights (started in 1990). And before you flame me about the glare of oncoming traffic being ridiculous and overwhelming in the daytime – it isn’t – just drive around here for a while and you’ll see. Pretty much every car on the road here has them now, and its a good thing.
Put me down for visibility, speed and alertness.

I’m happy I’m not living in Canada…

But it’s even happening in America. There seems no escape from tax after tax after tax anymore. On your dog, on vehicle registration, next on the pollution you create on top of the cost for what makes the pollution and on yard sales. It’s getting pretty ridiculous…

Then again, Europe pays ridiculously high taxes and they’re not doing a damn thing about it.

That guy is an attention-whore. He made a big stink as a Toronto chief of police … now doing the same thing. While I think going over 50km/h is excessive and people who drive like that should be pulled over and have their license suspended … I don’t think it’s right to having an officer write a ticket for your going into a ditch. So that means if your tire popped and you had to do into the side, that’s ticket worthy? Total waste of taxpayer’s time + money.

And those who say going 40km/h on highway 400 is ‘the norm’ … it’s not. 120-130 is the right lane and anyone going faster than that is in the left lane (ironically … is the name of this website…)

Canada the loser country? Keep the thread about cars.

PS There’s fewer cops in BC monitoring the roads since the others are out to get the drug traffickers … LOL.

31mph over posted speed limit is excessive.
Going into a ditch during a snowstorm is not a ticket offense. Next you’ll get people suing the state that the road conditions forced them off the road and since the state maintains the road it is at fault.

TBP,
it’s at ‘ocifer’ discretion to charge you with street racing or stunt driving or whatever. It’s now the law! Lawyers CAN’T help you. So, if ‘ocifer’ Johnny didn’t get laid last night or if ‘ocifer’ Jane having a PMS you’re screwed! Last Fall they’ve charged 71 year old with doing 161 km/h (100mph) and confiscated his license and impounded his vehicle. So, it’s not only youngsters that get charged. And after every long weekend on a news Sgt. Pig Wooley proudly says how many vehicles they’ve impounded due to stunt racing.
A few years ago there used to be custom car show in Markham Fairgrounds called ‘Darknights’. Not any more! Pigs were harassing participants on the way to the show. They’ve set up road blocks and were checking if your car passed emission test. Although there’re some bad apples who modify their vehicles to the point that they’re unsafe or remove polution control measures, most of enthusiasts look after their cars. Unlike some Joe Blow who drives some rust bucket with holes in the floor and using Duct tape to keep parts from falling off and who leaves behind a cloud of smoke. No, they don’t care about him, it’s enthusiasts who spend tons of cash to keep their vehicles in top shape who gets harassed by police.
A few years back, I lived in a rental property. It got burglarized. Guess what pigs sayed? “Ohh, we wont take fingerprints, since too many people live here!” HOW and WHY would I respect them after that!? If anything happens all they do is tell people to call CrimeStoppers with tips. They wont even investigate! They always rely on your tips! Why? Because investigation means you have to SPEND money. They would rather hide in a bushes with Radar gun and issue you a ticked for speedind, since it MAKES money for municipality!
They even give tickets for laws they make up! For instance, there was a speed trap at one end of a overpass. So, one journalist saw it and warned oncoming traffic by flashing his highbeams. By other side of overpass were hidden another pig, who wrote him a ticket. So, this jouro researched Highway Traffic Act and found NO evidence for breaking the law by flashing his headlights. Hi took it to Court. Judge dismissed his ticket without even hearing journos defence for the lack of evidence! Do you think cop who wrote that (and many other bogus tickets) and wasted taxpayers money by coming to court to defend his actions is gonna be punished by his ’stupidvisor’? Good luck with that!
