Top Gear presenter suffered “significant brain injury”

09/21/2006, 1:14 PM

By admin

Yesterday evening, we brought you the unfortunate news that Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond had been involved in a serious accident while driving a jet-powered dragster at 300 mph. Today, the Leeds General Infirmary confirmed during a press conference that Hammond suffered a “significant brain injury” in the crash. Doctors say, however, they are “reasonably optimistic” Hammond will make a “good recovery.”

Hmm, maybe if he had a government mandated traction control system there wouldn’t have been a crash.

that really sucks, I hope he gets better because I liked him the most of the two on top gear

Piablo, you can’t be serious.

Does anyone know if there has been any type of footage released of this?

Jesus—I’m sure that with your impeccable credentials, your translation of the doctors’ prognosis is spot-on. But how about giving them, and their patient, a break by wishing him a speedy recovery? I’m sure that’s what Jesus would do. :)

To the first post, how can you have traction control on a jet-powered dragster?

Maybe traction control could exist if there were two rockets. A computer could adjust the thrust depending on whether traction was slipping on either side of the car. This would assist the driver in handling.

Nice Yoda.

Andre Neves – I wasn’t serious at all, but I was very sarcastic. I wish the Hamster the best recovery possible.

I hope he makes as full a recovery as possible, but significant brain injury doesn’t auger well for his broadcasting career. You have to feel for his wife and kids. The air ambulance that took him to hospital has raised £4000 in donations to keep their service going already

Nobody deserves being locked inside a damaged brain and unable to function mentally. Poor man.

Now lets not rush to judgement here…

I think Clarkson has been been this way for years!!

Shoot, if only they had those camera activate speed bumps… they would have been able to slow him down.
But on a serious note, I do hope he makes a speedy recovery, Top Gear is the best car show around and Hammond is a big part of that… even though he gets his teeth whitened.

Poor guy. I’m going to miss him terribly if he doesn’t come back to the show. I hope he has a full recovery, but if nothing else, I hope, for his sake, that he is still able to drive after all of this.

The culture behind the show was warped, Jeremy and the producers obviously encouraged more extreme segments to keep the show top of the ratings.
The irony is that most car fanatics are not interested in rocket powered cars that bear little resemblence to road cars. This would have been the segmant during which I made a cup of tea

MiracleGro, I can’t stand people like you. A man is seriously injured and you deem it needed to attack the the show he was on.

This is pretty depressing, indeed. This bit from the BBC made me laugh, though…

“Hammond’s wife Mindy was at his bedside in the Leeds hospital and he was also visited by Top Gear co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

Clarkson told The Sun newspaper that Hammond had smiled when Clarkson had insulted his driving skills.”

MiracleGro: The reason Top Gear was entertaining is because of all the rediculous stuff they did, if you didnt have that, then you just have Tiff Needle and Fifth Gear…which is boring and hes gay.

The reason Hammy rocked is because he didn’t give a crap if his stupid American car couldn’t handle and drank fuel like nobodies business… he understood the character of the car – beauty and a beast – screw practicality and mechanical genius – we don’t need that… that’s why I love American cars too… Raw.

Course, nothing will steal Euro Fords’ places in my heart…
