Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame has published an entertaining and informative look at his experience purchasing a Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG. Clarkson had to find a daily driver he could use when his Ford GT was just too much. He asked himself “In what car have you had the most fun recently?” The answer was simple — “That’d be the SL’s baby brother. The SLK 55.” Clarkson drove the car through a winding course at an army base in Norfolk to in a comparison between the AMG hotrod and the Porsche Boxster S. (The SLK won that comparison, by the way). “I loved the jackhammer sound track, the brutal power delivery, the slightly vulgar styling details and, most of all, the air-scarf that blows warm air on the back of your neck when the roof is down. It’s like being massaged by an axe murderer.” But when it came to buying the car, all was not so wonderful. “I’ve learnt a valuable lesson, then, these past few weeks. Testing a car is easy. Writing about a car is easy. But buying one is bloody hard work.”
