The global economic downturn and complete collapse of the new car market has already shelved a number future vehicle plans, with several more on the cutting room floor. Honda announced late last year that its highly anticipated Acura NSX successor was officially dead, and now come word that several more Honda products are dead in the water.
According to the UK’s Autocar, the turbulent global economy has forced Honda to cancel its rear-wheel drive Acura plans. Acura’s rear-wheel drive program was developing legitimate competitors for BMW’s 3-, 5- and 7-Series sedans, but those future models have officially been canned. Acura’s first true BMW competitor was slated to hit the market in 2015 and would have taken on the BMW’s flagship 7-Series.
The demise of Acura’s rear-wheel drive program also means the death of the company’s V8 plans. Acura was developing the new engine for use in its rear-wheel drive models — which would have given the Japanese automaker equal footing with the rest of the world’s luxury automakers – but development has been stopped for good on the bent eight.
Although Honda’s Acura brand will be hit hardest by the cuts, even some more economical Honda models will feel the squeeze. A convertible version of Honda’s upcoming CR-Z hybrid sports car has been wiped from the board and Honda is said to have completely abandoned plans to replace its aging S2000 with the rumored S3000.
Although Honda’s product cuts seem pretty deep, it’s probably not the last we’ll hear on the subject. There is also talk of Honda merging its two Accord models (one for the U.S. and the other for global markets), with several other future plans still up in the air.

Honda is in the crapper too, but their problem is they have already blown their new-product pipeline load and wont have anything new but the Insight (which will be a hit) in the next couple years. Accord sales are dogging worse than industry average, and so are TL sales, TSX sales, MDX, Pilot, and Civic sales. All closed Q4 with reductions worse than the Big 2 average drop in the quarter, even including the Big 2’s major drop in full-size trucks. Those cars are Honda’s bread and butter cash cows. That’s gotta hurt.
At least Ford has some interesting stuff in the queue for the next 24 months. Honda’s gonna just slap that stupid smiley grill that nobodty wants on an RDX and hope the crApuraphiles sport wood when they do. Not a good plan.

Data pulled per Honda press releases on Honda’s website (Sept YTD sales, and Dec YTD sales). Honda is in pain, fanboy.
Honda brand … -38.15%
Acura brand … -25.73%
Accord … -42.95%
Civic … -43.75%

Hey, I really liked the 05-08 RL and if I had been born a millionaire that would be my ride of choice. It’s attractive, rock solid built, very resonable compared to it’s german competition (50k), and has everything you’d ever want in a car without making you stand out to be mugged or carjacked as in a BMW or Mercedes.
This is scarey stuff if it’s true since Honda is one that is seen as successful, and if it’s this bad, we really are in some crap right now. then again, Honda’s uber-conservative business model may have a part to play in this as well.

Honda/Toyota’s Age of Innocence is over,
GM, Ford, and Chrysler have all weathered major economic downturns in the past. And while they’re weak right now, the most interesting thing to me is how Toyota, Honda, and Nissan will handle the downturn.
For the first time in their respective histories, they’re experiencing the same slowdown the longer-established companies are. When the economy hit hard times in the ’70s and ’80s, the J3 saw nothing but sales growth and expanded market share. And when the economy expanded in the ’90s, their lineups expanded with it. So they are FAR less impervious to a downturn as they were before.
The D3 will stick around (except probably Chrysler) because they’re getting help from Uncle Sam. But keep in mind that the J3 get help from their government, too. And VW does, too.

Your stmt has no basis. Honda isnt dying. There is really no competition for the Accord other than the Camry and maybe The Sonata and Mazda 6. It will take some time and its clear the Malibu has failed in taking import owners. There is no real rival for the Civic other than the Corolla and the Mazda 3. The Cruze wont come out for another 8 years lol when they should have been here 4 years ago. The Honda factories are able to switch from building trucks to making more 4 cylinder cars which american factories seem to have an issue doing Sure Ford is doing it now but how long did that take
Although I was looking fwd to RWD based Acura’s all they have to do is put SH AWD on them and the economy has to get better and they will be back to where they were

Let’s get back to the topic on hand, THE DEATH OF THE S2000…
Last night I was watching The Fast & Furious on TV, the movie made that black S2000 seem like a Euro Exotic, around that time the NSX was so hard to get, I tried to get one but the mark-up was just stupid at the time, $25k over a $90k sticker? WTF? So I skipped on Honda all together, ended up with a SC Saleen…
The fact is with the death of RWD performance cars from Honda, the end of the F1 racing for them is just sad, just proves that Nissan is King of the Japanese Sport Car Market, this just me want to go out and get me a GT-R, but last I check they still had a $15K mark-up! But for what I can see the GT-R just may be worth it…

Honda has a bad habit of making a great car and then just declaring themselves “done” and selling it foerver….see the NSX and S2000 for examples. Maybe they would still be selling if they were updated more frequently….

inline6, Toyota and Honda were bleeding in mid ’80’s when value of yen went from 240yen for USD to about 110. That is why we have so many manufacturing plants in US bearing their insignia. Furthermore, Japan itself has been in the economic funk for the last 15 years. We are heading economically into Japanese territory, it is not another way around. That’s why Japanese factories are shut down at the first sign of economic trouble.

Crying shame. Toyota walked away from me when they canned the Celica, MR2, and Supra. Now Honda does so as well. Actually, Honda pissed me off when they took away the Acura RSX from the American soil. The RSX Type S’ resale value is so high, even for a used good shape ‘02 example can net around $10k, making it rather expensive for an older car. The goodness of such like the RSX is still well worth it to me.

The Integra and RSX defined “affordable driver’s car.” All the similar priced offerings from Infiniti and Lexus were very bland (okay, flat out boring) at that time. Now Acura and Honda is stepping in the boring direction just like Lexus and Toyota. Yawn. Infiniti and Nissan have stepped up and granted us some pretty desirable “driver’s car” selections as since the first 2003 G35 and 350Z came about. But where the hell is the “affordable” part?

Implusive – It does “need-to-rev” yeah, kind of. I do agree that the ap2 was aged and the need for a new facelift was due. But the f22 that’s in them is one of their best engines. They have been heavily engineered and tested, and for get that little guy to do those amazing numbers is rather impressive IMO. Why do you think the average aftermarket parts for them actually decrease performance? I’m talking other than Spoon and Mugen of course. All I’m saying is go test drive an 08 s2k, 350z, and an rx-8 and see which one puts the biggest grin on your face. For me it was the Honda. The heated seats in the Z were nice yeah, but I wasn’t looking for a luxury car, I was looking for a sports car.

All you Japanese fanboys / Detroit haters seem to forget (or maybe never knew) that Nissan nearly died in the mid-to-late 1990’s, and if it wasn’t for their hookup with Renault and Carlos Ghosn, they would probably be gone by now, AND Mitsubishi was on death’s door less than 5 years ago, and received bailout money from the Japanese government. Mazda nearly died in the 1980’s too. About the only Japanese automakers who haven’t nearly died at one point in the recent past are Honda and Toyota.
