Toyota has taken the wraps off its 2010 4Runner SUV, which is on display today at the State Fair of Texas. The official unveiling follows the leak of several images two weeks ago. Revamped inside and out, the 4Runner retains its body-on-frame construction. That won’t make the 2010 4Runner the greenest SUV on the block, but it will make the ‘ute a formidable off-road vehicle. In fact, Toyota says the 2010 4Runner, which proved itself in August on the Rubicon Trail, is “more rugged than ever.”
The new 4Runner is taller, wider and longer, and has a selection of new motors. The SUV can be ordered with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine featuring VVT-i, available as part of the 4×2 SR5 model. The DOHC 16-valve 2.7 makes 157 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. It comes mated to a four-speed automatic transmission with 2.80:1 first gear and 0.753 overdrive 4th. The 2.7 delivers 18 city/23 highway mpg.
A more powerful V6 maximizes the truck’s capabilities by offering more power and torque. The 4.0-liter engine offers 34 horsepower more than the prior V6, and 10 horsepower more than the optional V8 of the previous generation. That comes to a grand total of 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. The V6 4Runner achieves an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined, an improvement of more than five percent. With the new 4.0-liter engine, maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.
The SUV is available in a variety of configurations. It will be offered in three variations:Tthe top-of-the-line Limited, the base SR5, and the off-road-oriented Trail grade. SR5 and Trail 4×4 models have a two-speed lever-operated, part-time four-wheel-drive system with neutral position, while the 4Runner Limited is equipped with full-time, four-wheel-drive with a locking center differential and employs a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The new 4Runner is also equipped with a stronger rear differential over the previous model, thanks to a gear ring that has increased in size from 7.87 to 8.18 inches.
For improve on-road performance, the Limited grade comes standard with an X-REAS suspension system that automatically adjusts the damping force of shocks when driving over bumpy surfaces, or when cornering.
To enhance grip, the A-TRAC system is now standard equipment on all 4×4 models. The system can distribute driving force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, making terrain irregularities and slippery patches transparent to the driver.
The Trail package offers Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) as an option. KDSS improves terrain-following ability by disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more axle travel, and better suspension articulation in slow uneven terrain.
Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade. CRAWL is an adjustable electro-mechanical system that can be tuned to match the terrain by selecting any of five speed levels. The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system which allows the 4×4 operator to dial in wheel slip control to match the terrain.
All 4Runner 4×4 models are standard-equipped with Downhill Assist Control (DAC), which is designed to augment the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by holding the vehicle to a target speed with no driver intervention. All V6 4Runner models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle stationary while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.
The cabin has been redesign with better materials and improved aesthetics. Both leather and cloth upholstery are available. More cargo space is available due to the fold-flat second-row rear seats, which do not require removal of the headrest for rearrangement. For models with three rows of seats, the third row seats are split 50/50, and they fold flat to allow the seatback to become the floor of the luggage compartment. Another convenience feature is an available pull-out cargo deck that is capable of carrying up to 440 pounds of weight. The cargo deck slides out to make loading heavy items easier.
Toyota says that the 4Runner will be in dealers by late October, although the four-cylinder variant won’t arrive until early next year.
Pricing starts at $27,500 for the base SR5 2WD with the four-cylinder. A 4×2 SR5 V6 runs $27,175 and the 4×4 SR5 V6 will cost $30,915. The Trail model, only available with four wheel drive, will start from $35,700. A base Limited 4×2 lists for $37,765 with the 4×4 version going for $39,800. The volume leader, the SR5 4×4 with the V6, is priced the same as the outgoing 2009 despite the added equipment.
Note that the second and third Live Images below are of the lightly-camouflaged prototype that traversed the Rubicon Trail.

This is pointless. When we hear about SUV’s going from body on frame to unibody, we all talk about how they aren’t used for off-roading. So why praise this 4000 ib+, four cylinder bloated SUV for “sticking to it’s roots” and “being the last of a dying breed” when it’s obviously a pretty weak and pathetic attempt at trying to serve two worlds, fuel economy and “off-road prowess”.
The only thing that would make me think Toyota was actually committed to both was if they reduced the curb weight by two or three hundred pounds (which is ridiculous, it would end up just shy of the Camry’s curb weight which is also ridiculous), put some more power into that four cylinder, put a MODERN transmission in there, not a FOUR SPEED, and THEN had selectable four wheel drive with the four cylinder.
Weight around 3800ibs
Six speed
Power for the four cylinder around 190hp/200ftibs
Winning formula, RIGHT THERE!!!

Obviously Toyota isn’t going to invest much into the 4Runner…it was going to be scrapped had they not got so far into the development process. The Highlander literally killed the 4Runner’s sales.
Let’s be honest here: the vast majority of SUV buyers don’t ever take their vehicles off road. Even if what A4 said is right, it’s not like like it’s going to be a significant difference.
Toyota’s idea of putting a 4-cylinder into the 4Runner was a good idea (just like the 4-cylinder in the base highlander), but a 4-speed auto? People went crazy over GM using them, so what exactly is Toyota’s rationale behind this?
I’m pretty sure 75-85% of buyers are going to opt for the V6. Sure it’s decent fuel economy, but what’s the point if the car has no type of gutso at all?
I’d definitely whip this though, especially with the SR5 in black with a V6. It’s not the most attractive car, but it’s far from being the monstrosity most people on here are making it out to be.
My main gripes about this car: fuel door doesn’t lock (big pet peeve), shifter is way oversized, and where’s the rear-view windshield wiper?

If you all think CRV’s, and Rav4s are the real thing help yourself. There will be a 90%-10% mix (V6-4). The new V6 puts out more HP then the previous V8. They will sell everyone they build….

to keep it short, this thing appears to be more about the sport and the utility factor than a crossover, which is more about asphalt performance and looking cool…this thing is about capability…and with the 6-cylinder it should be pretty functional all around…at least that’s the impression i get from the review over at motortrend…

for those of you who don’t know what this is (from wikipedia):
First appearing in 2000, the 1KD-FTV is one of the newest engines built by Toyota.
The 1KD-FTV is a 3.0L (2982cc) straight-4 common rail diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger and Intercooler. It has 16 valves and a DOHC (double overhead camshaft) design. Bore is 96 mm and stroke is 103 mm. It generates 170 hp (125 kW) at 3400 rpm, and 260 – 295 lb·ft of torque at 1800-3400 rpm. Redline of this engine is at 4200 RPM. Compression ratio is 18.4:1.
This engine uses Toyota’s D-4D Common Rail fuel injection technology operating at ultra high pressures of up to 1350 bar (or about 19,580psig) which is about 8 times more than the pressure of conventional fuel injection systems within a “common rail” that feeds the injectors on all four cylinders (older diesel engines have a separate line leading from the injection pump to each injector). This is combined with a 32-bit ECU which controls fuel quantity, valve-timing, and boost pressure at different engine parameters resulting in best fuel economy and also full utilization of power during acceleration. Pilot injection is also utilized by the common rail fuel system to smooth engine operation. Small amounts of fuel are introduced into the combustion chamber prior to the main injection event, reducing lag time and promoting more continuous and complete combustion. Exterior and interior engine noise is also reduced.
The 1KD engine produces 17% more horsepower with 11% less fuel consumption than its predecessor, the 1KZ engine. Fuel consumption is also 12% more efficient than Toyota’s Hybrid synergy drive.
This engine was first used in Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and now used in the Toyota Fortuner, Hiace and Toyota Hilux.

I’m sorry, but I just can’t help but complain about this thing further.
Look at the rear seats, what the hell is up with that mesh stuff? I’ve had the unfortunate experience of having seat covers with that material, and all it does is stick and rip. And look at the folding mechanism holding the middle row seats there, it’s such a little detail that makes it look even cheaper. Yet another cheap center console for the middle row. I don’t understand it, I sat in a Chrysler 300M recently, and the center console for the rear is formed from ONE piece of plastic. This seems the same. It’s just little details that put American manufacturers behind their European counterparts.
Even worse, what’s up with those dials on the right side of the center console? Do they expect everyone who drives this to have arms as long as Michael Jordans? Doesn’t look like you’d have much comfort from the doorpanels if your arms ARE long enough to reach the far dials, being that they are just single pieces of cheap plastic.
Oh, and I have one other ridiculous thing to knock on. Look at the picture of the “start button”, about 15 pictures into the gallery. Did anybody else notice a “party mode” button? WTF!?!?!

Only Trail model looks decent. Other models look heavy and ugly. Especially in dark colors. Too many straight lines in this vehicle now. Fenders are extremely oversized. Their shape doesn’t match round shape of the wheels. Otherwise I like box like design of this vehicle which reminds those 4runners that have been manufactured before 2001. Those old 4runners look better notwithstanding their box like shapes. I hope 2011 restyled models would look better.
