Toyota will use the Detroit auto show to reveal a new concept vehicle called the A-BAT. The truck offers a glimpse of what a future compact pickup from the Japanese automaker might look like.
The vehicle appears to be intended as a competitor to the Honda Ridgeline. It’s not known if Toyota plans to produce a truck based on the concept.
“Driving from beyond the suburbs to the city is a way of life for many people,” said Kevin Hunter, president, Calty Design Research, Inc. “We’ve taken Toyota’s truck heritage to a different level by envisioning a vehicle capable of maneuvering the suburbs as well as dirt roads.
“This compact truck is as comfortable for long commutes as it is for road trips,” Mr. Hunter said. “It can accommodate outdoor toys and home improvement supplies. Plus, customers benefit from the hybrid powertrain’s low emissions and fuel economy.”
The A-BAT concept rides on a unibody platform. It features a four-foot bed, but overall storage space can grow to as much as eight feet when the midgate is folded down into the cab and the tailgate is opened.
Power for the A-BAT is provided by a four-cylinder gasoline engine mated with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive.

The flexible midgate concept is a direct ripoff of the idea that originated on Chevrolet’s Avalanche. Since Honda copied it, I guess it was only a matter of time before Toyota followed suit. If this vehicle becomes a production reality, I think it should be assigned to the Scion division. Toyota’s lineup is already stuffed to the gills and too dowdy for this vehicle and its copycat innovative features.

Even with a hybrid powertrain, wouldn’t this be too heavy to get 40mpg? I thought Toyota was dedicated to being green? Wait, they’re just out for profit like any other automaker? Hmm, better tell that to the circle-jerkers.

Lol this is the basic recipe for all foreign cars in the US dude. All are much, much uglier and useless than their foreign counterparts. Japanese trucks that are made for the japanese market are much, much, much better than the ones in the US market. They look nicer and have comparatively higher quality. This is the same with the Camry and Accords and all other cars that 1115 is always constantly and pointlessly arguing about and also with Euro Fords.

I’m really not sure what to think of this bloated looking thing. I don’t mind the exterior, besides for the window panes, the stupid headlights, the oversized wheels, the disgustingly tall bed height, and the fact Toyota isn’t thinking about the people who uses these vehicles (when I say this, I mean the high bed, most likely delicate interior, huge wheels, things a contractor, or even a once a week gardener, does not want). And as I mentioned the interior I see as a huge problem; all the presumably plastic panels, the yellow crap that looks like camoflauge only fit for… a Toyota! Seriously, look at the edges of the fabric, which look like someone just stretched it over an existing dash. I most specifically say this because of the vent panels, which look like they were just covered up, and the fact there’s no crease in the plastic around this fabric (does there need to be one? No, but it looks like it was purpose built for that fabric, in that interior).
I do like the overall design of the truck. The short hood, the… well, actually looking back, that’s the only thing that I see that would be useful on a large truck.
But you know what? Deep down inside… I have to look back and forth in between Dodge Rampage pictures, and this (poser), and notice that it’s just a carbon copy. Please everybody, at the same time be honest with a straight face and tell me that Honda and Toyota have a unique design on their hands. I have to say, I like it, but I would go for more traditional trucks first hand, or Avalanche, because I can testify first hand that it’s a useful truck. Would I consider the Dodge Rampage more useful than this? More so than this maybe.
LP640- True, but about the Japanese market… Personally, I know Mitsubishi can make a damn good flat nose truck, and Mazda has a nice looking international truck, but the Japanese truck market is nothing like the United States. They don’t have the same mid-large size truck market, to the same kind of people as Americans do.
tripleonefive- You are nothing but hilarious.

This has nothing on the Ridgeline, which in turn is quite gay itself.
However, if they stretched a roof over the pickup bed and made better rear seats, they would have a decent formal SUV that would be a contender for someone shopping around for an H3, Murano, CX-9, etc… That’s a very lucrative market.

Just plain ugly, even uglier than the Ridgeline. If Toyota put a small diesel in the Tacoma, I’d buy it tomorrow.
As for Japanese ability to make trucks, Toyota has been making jeep eaters for decades (land cruisers prior to 1985) and the Tacoma is a real truck (not like these car/truck things). If you’ve never taken the Tacoma or the older landcruisers on 4X4 runs you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about when you boneheads say the Japanese can’t make trucks.

I don’t love the detailing, but its nice to see an idea of the future of truck design. All the chat about contractor’s and load-carrying is a waste of time. Toyotay already offer the Tundra for that market. This is a leisure product and to my mind it’s only competition would be the Avalanche or Ridgeline.
The short bonnet and sloping windscreen are original and might be very appealing if they weren’t paired with the Aztec-esque angular styling. The high bonnet and big wheels are also appealingly butch and I could imagine this creating a niche for itself in between the H3 and Avalanche, especially if it could be ordered from the dealer with bespoke options such as tailgate tents, coolboxes, bike carriers etc, all designed to clip into those fixing points in the rear bed.

The new pictures even make me think it’s more repulsing and disgusting.
It’s so huge, but hell that bed must be… 1 foot deep? I would consider that with the new design, it’s not going to have the same aerodynamics as most trucks. If anybody has realized it or not, most trucks don’t create a lot of drag because of the bed and tailgate, and I’m curious with the change with the C pillars and roofline.
That’s really interesting, they put a coffee mug in the tailgate… I wonder how that will function when I have to load the vehicle with loads of bricks, two by fours or when I step on the thing… SLIP! Lawsuit right there, so I’m anxious to buy one
But seriously, if any of you consider this a preview of future trucks, you have got to be kidding. It’s dysfunctional as a Peel P40 with a bed strapped onto it and a fifth wheel. And it’s a total, blatant copy of Dodge’s Rampage, which was much more functional and better aimed. Seriously, just take a second and pull your heads out of your asses, and look at the front grill, very much like Dodge. The overall profile, if you overlay two images of the Dodge Rampage and this thing, they look almost identical, with the exception of this thing having more “carved out” looks to it.
Axehead- I’m not going to argue this over and over, because I’ve driven/ been driven in both on soft as well as rough terrain, and I can say I’d take a Jeep Wrangler over a Landcruiser. There’s many reasons why, but the largest are
-Price
-Capabilities (yes, the Land Cruiser is capable, but it does not have great overhangs, longer wheelbase, heavier, no removable mainstream top or doors like the Wrangler, and has become slightly softer over the years)
-Options (it has more interior compliant options, but concerning off road options it lags behind the Wrangler).
-Customization (the Wrangler has a HUGE aftermarket).
-Room. This is part opinion based, but the Wrangler has huge amounts of room, and the Land Cruiser does too, but the Wrangler uses that room in different ways and in my opinion, more efficiently.
-Miles per gallon and engine options.
Really, it’s more about your needs, because while the Jeep Wrangler is better off road and uses it’s space better, the Land Cruiser is more comfortable on the road. Now, I noticed you said before 1985, but come one, you can’t be honest and say that the Land Cruiser was not copying the Willy’s Jeep. It’s so blatant, every exterior, and even the interior in some ways is eerily similar to each other.
Got Handling?- I understand what your saying about usability, but this thing must have a taller bed than the Chevrolet Avalanche or Ford Sport Track, and yet it’s maybe a foot and a few inches deep! And despite the mini-size bed, the interior looks to be smaller than Avalanche or Sport Trac, especially rear leg room which is the most important aspect of these vehicles.
