I myself own 2 FJ40's.A 69 and 71 and I leave Jeeps on the side of the trails on a regular basis. As far as the new FJ goes it seems to be a decent offroader for most who want a comfortable ride with ac and other comforts. If you're gonea do some serious rock climbing you're not gonea be looking at any of the new vehicles without serious modifications.Whether it's Jeep Toyota, or Hummer.

The package is about 200 more than a base with all upgrades. Its not that bad.
As for a Humper, get a grip. H3 has nothing on the FJ. That is a mall SUV. I pulled one out ditch on my last off road trip. It did have some nice big shinny wheels. Besides it is a GM.
Nissan has nice 1980 lines looks great next to my brown 84 civic. It is fairly capible off road though. And Heep. Ok I owned a few and had fun in them. But you are trying to hard to defend it.

As far as price all vehicles are a bunch of metal with a few bends here and a tweak or two there. Technology has bridged the gap between most vehicles. The differnce now is in how it feels and appeals to the driver. Not everyone needs or wants a truck with 22 inch chrome wheels and Norstrom or pimp daddy bumper stickers on them. Since it is completely up to the person behind the wheel, I think it is lame to listen to a bunch of posts and reviews. "Unless a car magazine review says it will blowup or break." Just get out there and dive them for yourself. Then buy what you like not what some else thinks is cool.

Man you guys get on my nerves.

A whole lot of japanese car bashing going on here.....As a longtime 4 wheeler and owner of an FJ I feel the need to chime in.

The FJ is no Wrangler or Jeep Rubicon I'll grant you that, but it does have quite the off road capability. I'll be the first to admit that independent front suspension on a true 4 wheeler is a joke, but that being said the FJ does not do bad at all off road. It has plenty of power to tow my real off road rig (an 86 toyota truck with a solid axle front) and it will never leave me stranded. In my personal experience and according to most surveys the Toyota has much better reliability than most if not all US offerings. I make this claim after looking through countless Consumer Reports comparisons and JD powers scores. And before you go off on the conspiracy theory B.S. I'll add that on the Rubicon trail and other off road areas the Toyota trucks have much better overall reliabilty. And the solid axle toyotas will go anywhere a jeep does.

The Jeep(Liberty)and other Jeep models are smne of my favourites, but the new FJ is also very well done. Why the name 'Voodoo Blue'? Obviously because the FJ Cruiser has put in time in Africa and no doubt earned it.Seriously.

I can see where a bunch a wannabe offroaders would diss the FJ, But if you get out in the nowheres of the world, I'd rather have the confidence in my ride to get me through it and back again. I can say that through 32 yrs of travel from Africa to So America and through some of the roughest terrain in the world, if the FJ is half the ride mmy FJ40 has been , then its still twice the vehicle the others you guys mention. Stick to the fields behind your garage and keep the pretty bling blings out of my way.

How could anyone justify buying this when they could get the Hummer H3 that is more capable and a GM product. Also the toyota styling is so bland go with the GM and you will be more happy!

I always thought Motor Trend was biased towards American. American cars for the most part need a lot more than a favorable bias to win a comparo test these days.

My beef with Motor Trend has always been the excitement they give concept cars and future vehicles than the here and now.

Joeseph, don't you know? Motor Trend is not to be trusted, they are one of the chief perpetrators of the anti-American pro-Japanese media bias.

Why Motor Trend choose the 2 imports for 1st and 2nd over the 2 domestics?? I'll tell you why - it's a CONSPIRACY! It has nothing to do with any of the stuff they wrote in that article, thats all just bullshit to forward the CONSPIRACY!

Endurancevm....you better read again. I think your views are a tad bit biased....just a little.

The Jeep finished last in both the overall and trail test. 4th Place Jeep Liberty Renegade -
"Too cute, too old, and not macho enough to contend in this group."

I think the FJ is kinda cool, but way overpriced. All the slimy Toyota dealers near me heap on the options to get the price close to $30K.

This special edition is just another way for the dealers to pile it on for more profit.

BTW, all those people that are talking about the motor trend article:

The Jeep Liberty was crippled with its All Season tires that it had, otherwise it would have beat their SOY...Xterra. Another thing, the H3 was the best offroader and the Nissan was the worst(Jeep Liberty had all seasons?). The FJ Cruiser is ugly, slower, not capable, expensive, shitty interior and a complete disgrace to automotive engineering. If one of the big three released a car like the FJ there would be riots abound, people would burn schools and turn over cars and rape the younglings!

Dont support the Japanese in their endless quest to infiltrate Jeep territory. There is a reason why the Wrangler is the best there is, its because its the original, big daddy, most experienced etc. You dont hire a computer nerd for the tug of war team, you dont get a japanese car for offroad prowess.

$7k and no increase in HP???

Reminds me of the SE editions of Toyota cars like the Camry and Corolla. Body package with no substance behind it.

Perfect for posers and gangsta wannabees.

A real man drives a sleeper.

Renton and Joseph, I'm serious. I actually bought the XTerra Offroad out of all of them which truely is the best of the bunch. And I tell ya, that thing is a blast. Stock Wrangler, stock XTerra Offroad... I would go as far as to say equal ability. BUT, if I did not have the opportunity to purchase an Xterra, I would be driving an H3 over the FJ. Here's why:
1, the price of an FJ is rediculous. Equally equiped, the FJ is about $31K, versus the $25K I paid for the XTerra. At least with the H3 you get a few luxury features.
2, there are two normal doors as apposed to four. The suicide doors are a pain with passengers.
3, there are only two operable windows in the FJ. The suicide door windows are fixed.
4, I test drove all three of them and the FJ and H3 felt equal in power, both are somewhat sluggish.
I believe the comparo you are talking about is from Car and Driver. XTerra, H3, FJ, and the Grand Cherokee Laredo (and they finished in that order). If you put any credence into their reviews, they would go with the H3 out of all of them if off roading was the only thing to judge them on. And frankly, I haven't heard one thing about any poor quality for the H3, the fit and finish is pretty nice. If there are reports or recalls, I stand corrected.

The FJ is more about the form than the functon.

Renton and Joseph, I’m serious. I actually bought the XTerra Offroad out of all of them which truely is the best of the bunch. And I tell ya, that thing is a blast. Stock Wrangler, stock XTerra Offroad… I would go as far as to say equal ability. BUT, if I did not have the opportunity to purchase an Xterra, I would be driving an H3 over the FJ. Here’s why:
1, the price of an FJ is rediculous. Equally equiped, the FJ is about $31K, versus the $25K I paid for the XTerra. At least with the H3 you get a few luxury features.
2, there are two normal doors as apposed to four. The suicide doors are a pain with passengers.
3, there are only two operable windows in the FJ. The suicide door windows are fixed.
4, I test drove all three of them and the FJ and H3 felt equal in power, both are somewhat sluggish.

I agree with Renton.....H3??????????. It's a very heavy beast that is WAY underpowered, not to mention the on-road attributes....and then there's the lack of quality. I believe there was a comparo between the Jeep Liberty, H3, Nissan Xterra, and FJ. You're way better off with the Nissan or FJ.

I can't say how disappointed I was in the FJ when it came out. I was actually on a waiting list to purchase one until I finally got a chance to see one and what options were available. Personally i can't believe they are working on this special edition when the rest of the original options haven't been completed yet. When this truck came out in March, only about 25% of the intended options were available. Even the wind deflector and roof top off road lights that they advirtised would not be available until August/spetember, and I still havn't seen one yet with them.

I find it strange that they have a special edition announced the same year the truck debuted. Something tells me they turned off quite a few people and this is their way of winning some fans back. For the price though, I would be looking at the H3 instead of this.

don't you guys wonder why they are only making 3200? Do you really think toyota cares if the package is exclusive. The bean-counters figured they could only sell that many

Considering how much dealers are already marking up the FJ, this one will probably be sold for about 35 grand. Ridiculous!

Oh great, a TuRD(TRD if you try to pronounce it) for the ugliest car ever concieved(next to the Aztek). 7k for almost nothing is completely absurd. 25j is reasonable for the car, however 32 is pushing the limits quite a bit.

Seems like an expensive package for what you get. I was expecting a supercharger or something.
